Apple has agreed to settle a long-running class-action case in the US over allegations it deliberately slowed down older iPhones.

The proposed settlement, which still has to be approved by judge Edward Davila, could cost Apple up to $500m.

That could be just $25 (£20) for each affected user, depending on how many claims are made.

Apple has denied any wrongdoing in the case but settled in part because of the cost of continuing litigation.

The case dates back to December 2017, when Apple confirmed a long-held suspicion among phone owners by admitting it had deliberately slowed down some iPhones as they got older.

As batteries aged, their performance decreased and the "slowdown" lengthened the phones' lifespan, it said.

But critics took it as proof of "planned obsolescence" - when manufacturers deliberately impair older products to prompt users to buy a new model.

Does that mean lawyer and court fees cost them close to a half a billion?

I’m guessing that if it carries on for another X years they reckon that it likely would.

You can be sure they only use the top dog lawyers.

Not yet, but getting close:
In addition, the lawyers will ask the court to grant them $93m in "reasonable attorneys' fees" and another $1.5m in expenses.

Similar settlement last month in France:

Some context from Louis Rossmann in 2017:

The joke with this whole issue is that Apple really did everyone a favour here, but just went about it the wrong way.

What they should have rather done is issued a warning to the user to say your battery is now poked and then given them offer to run in this "stable until you put in a new battery" mode.

Without the throttling in place the devices were/are really bloody unstable and as much as I love Rossman his anti-Apple shines through a bit here because the very shame **** does happen on other brands when the battery starts going.

The whole planned obsolescence conspiracy is just stupid though, if anything this "feature" completely negates planned obsolescence because you are quite literally extending the time people can still use the device without spending money on it.

Sorry - I know enough about how Apple try to milk their customers for every penny. This is not a conspiracy. Their products are over priced, impossible to maintain and fix without one of their very pathetic service companies and they just don't meaningfully last in comparison to other products. MacBooks are a disaster to fix, or get parts for. They go to such great lengths to stop people from repairing their own devices that they glue the batteries to the phone. They limit supply of chips so certain laptops just cannot be repaired. A damn chip worth a few dollars could junk the whole thing if it's not available! The waste is sickening. The impact that these policies have to the environment are staggering.

Apple is really a company geared for maximum profitability, and not for the end user's concerns in mind. I hope more people will wake up to this sooner rather than later.

Nonsense.

I’ve worked with their products for approaching two decades now.

They last longer than mostly everything out there and they are quite serviceable, while not being normal user DIY accessible sure.

Batteries are simple to replace and glue is part and parcel of any modern install. Glue is also stupidly easy to remove and it being there is what offers reliability in and of itself so that it doesn’t dislodge.

MacBooks have been issue free for a long time until the most recent keyboard issues that have been covered out of warranty and before that the 2011 GPU issue which was also covered under extended warranty.

They are premium priced, but you also get what you pay for.

Nope.

I know how to fix these devices too. Down to replacing chips. They are over priced.

Also, I am sure Louis Rossmann says hi.

Edit:

You should go check out Apple's right to repair testimony. Not to worry though, the little man will come out on top eventually.

I need to buy an extended warranty to have my device replaced due to a design / manufacturing flaw? How many times does someone have to screw you over before you decide they actually are not designing products for you in mind?

I know him quite well.

And sure while component level repair can be more tricky it’s also very rarely necessary.

Just because the need exists on some units doesn’t make them unreliable as a whole.

We run 400+ MacBooks here for many years on end with very little in the way off issues short of the recent keyboard problems or physical user action breaking a device.

At a precious job we had hundreds of Macs and twice as many PC’s from the Dell and those failed all the damn time in large amounts statistically.

Granted they were even more stable and reliable in those days and the quality has certainly dipped but it’s by a small although noticeable margin.

I didn’t say anything of the sort.

Apple covered those issues under their own extension of warranty. It didn’t cost people anything.

Just like the many other warranty extensions they’ve done over the years.

There is no conspiracy to do the end user in.

A minority issue does not a majority problem make. When a majority problem exists Apple has stepped up many times to sort it out and retain their loyal customers.

That’s why they remain loyal customers due to their own personal experiences with the brand. Rossman’s minority fringe cases does not represent a majority.

Why are people so fixated on Apple? Plenty of other companies make products that are expensive, hard or impossible to repair or have manufacturing/design faults. The complete nonsense being peddled at the hearings in the US is not just coming from Apple either. So what's the obsession with Apple?

It's the same with the bizarre need some Android users have to insult people who choose iOS.

No, there is no conspiracy. Just a business model which is not in the end user's best interests.
That's pretty typical business behaviour. Almost always companies have to be forced by governments to put customers first.

No one is insulting the users. I just find some people are very cult'ish in their support of Apple.

Apple are the market leaders. Other manufacturers are modelling their businesses and policies around Apple's practices.

For a $ Trillion company, they surely can afford to expand their repair network and help smaller companies repair their products. It's really not such a hard ask. We will get better value for money, and the environment will thank them. If people cannot get behind this philosophy, they have a personal vested interest in Apple.
