Apple South Africa.

Core has the monopoly market here and always will. Apple has taken their (iStore and Apple) reseller program and trade-in initiative and implemented it worldwide because of how "fantastic" it is - it's like they blow hot air up each other's a**es.

Unless their relationship sours, we will never see Apple retail in the country.

Had a family member who had a license along with Core back in the day as a reseller. Sadly he passed before Apple made it big. He was selling niche to the design/video editing market back then.

Could have made it huge if he was still around.

This is not entirely true. A big reason has to do with the stringent requirements government would impose on the company to do business in SA. Business does not like to work in places with over restrictive red tape. This is a similar reason why Apple has held off opening a store in a place like India for example despite the popularity of the brand in the country.

Core prob had him taken out, I wouldn't put it past them and their dodgy business dealings.

Sure, but they are a symptom of the problem here. If the government wasn’t so anti-free market we would have tons of competition and would not be restricted to one monopolistic company.

Well when the family owns Core and Paramount, I wouldn't put it past them.

Father's friend had a meeting with them back in the day and they did not have the best reputation.

Could be a factor, but they can do better. They just wont because its about making money fast and nothing else.

Like their dumb excuse for AppleCare sold as a dodgy insurance product - I can tell you now the MAIN reason for that was not wanting to wait for bill-backs to Apple for support costs when they could just fleece the consumers with a local-only insurance policy and skim profit off it.

And then you have their shops and the NPCs that work there... don't even get me started.

It's not uncommon practice for companies to follow this model in SA: Nikon, Sony and more do exactly the same thing, the market is simply too small for expensive electronics imo.

Yes but it wasn’t until the government relaxed the stringent requirements for foreign companies to to business in the country. SA needs to do the same otherwise we will never be able to compete with other emerging markets like China, India etc.

Fair point, my answer was very simplistic as the Q itself was on the vague side.

I agree with all your points.
 
Ok so end of the day government stuffing things up again so Apple will come to South Africa themselves and we are stuck with dealers ripping us off.

We’re still missing a few services though. Apple One abroad comes with 6 services and we only have the 4.

I don’t care about Fitness+ but it would be great to have News+
