can anybody point me in the right direction to getting hold of Apple for support? i'm getting the random shutdown issue and it needs to be resolved asap!

i'm in east london and as far as i'm aware there are no resellers here. i bought the macbook through zastore.

an email address would be great. from the Apple website i've found '011 719 9161' for Technical Support - is this right?

Try Johan Du Toit from Apples for Apples - he is from Durban but does trips to East London regularly. He may even be able to help over the phone.

I had the same issue, try reseating your RAM. The support people had my macbook for over a week and it never misbehaved once. I asked them to reseat the RAM and I haven't had any problems since. They did have to replace the top cover at the same time and I don't know if that had any effect.
I did have an issue with rebooting where I got coloured vertical lines, but I was able to fix that myself.

Call Core - +27 11-523 9400

so this morning i decided to try the following:
- reset PMU
- reseat RAM

only thing i didn't try was the resetting of PRAM AND NVRAM

BUT...and this is a pretty BIG but check out the pictures of the RAM when i pulled them out.

there seems to be some sort of corrosion or residue on the connection end of the RAM. i've read reports of the heatsink glue melting and seeping into the RAM slots. not sure if this is it.

i've been in contact with Apples 4 Apples in durban but seeing as I bought the macbook from core (zastore) i think i should start dialogue with them. i'm going to push for a replacement macbook as who knows what else is damaged! does anybody have an email address for a senior person at core?

also which board does the RAM slot into? is it the logic board which seems to be the unit they're replacing these days?

I think I found your problem: It is only 256Mb sticks :D

Kidding. Seriously though, those sticks look extremely dodgy. It almost looks as of some acid got in contact with the PC board just above the connectors, eating away it at. I reckon give Core a call ... I don't have any numbers there, sorry

Looks to me like you live near the sea. Seriously - ask Richard Warren-Smith about their computers at Morgan Bay hotel - only way to sort it is to have closed room and aircon. Do you live/work near Gonubie/Quigney, etc?
Although I must admit, the localisation of the mess seems tim indicate some sort of spill. But an electronics fundi may tell you something otherwise - similar marks can be made with heat on a solder joint.

word from apples 4 apples (and apparently appple themselves have a bulletin about it) is that its a lubricant used when assembling the machine at the factory.

So what they going to do about it?

They'll probably issue a recall in a few years time:D like the e-Macs. By the time Apple owned up to problems with a batch, they were obsolete!
