Apple tv bargain

No jailbreak for the ATV3. You'd have to shop around for a ATV2 for that. Jailbreaking is pretty simple but the jailbreaks are taking longer and longer to roll out. Apple's chipsets have become really difficult to crack.
That said, I love my ATV3. Have the US iTunes Store, Netflix, Hulu and my whole house running on it... I think they are really good mediators.
The regular pricing is around R1200,00 but be aware, you'll need an HDMI cable for the device (it's not included), so plan to spend another R200 or so in addition to that R798,00

Bought a R50 (ex vat) HDMI cable from Esquire - works perfectly with my ATV.

If you use Plex Media Server it's easy as pie to stream all content to the Apple TV.

I presume that you're talking about using Plexconnect

If you are, the only downside is that you then can't access Netflix (in SA anyway) since the DNS entry change is the one that enables unlocator/unotelly/tunlr etc to do their location magic.

Durned irritating - I like the ATV but wish I could stream my own media to it

Yes I am talking about Plexconnect, add the DNS to your router, problem solved.

Edit: You can manually enter a DNS to the Plexconnect config.

And you can enter the DNS to the PC running Plexconnect. Problem solved three times.

Thanks

1. On router I want DNS to point to OpenDNS (protect kids and SO's PC's)

From your description, you seem to be saying

2. point the ATV DNS to the Plexconnect and
3. within Plexconnect point DNS to unlocator/unotelly/tunlr

Best of all 3 worlds

Now just need to find the time to fiddle :D

Plexconnect wiki:

anything DNS

I use services such as Unblock-US to access regionally restricted content, will PlexConnect still work?: Yes, just set the "ip_dnsmaster" IP in the "Settings.cfg" file (generated on first run) to your unblock service's IP.

The other applications on my ATV are working much slower after I setup PlexConnect: Change the "ip_dnsmaster" IP in the "Settings.cfg" file (this is generated on the first clean shutdown of PlexConnect) to your ISP's DNS server IP (it is set to Google's DNS server by default; for some users this may cause slowness on the other native applications as it masks your geographical location to content delivery networks)
