So.. I recently bought myself an Apple Tv for the purpose of streaming media to my TV either via my iPhone, iPad or another storage source and using it to mirror what I'm doing on my Pad if so desired.
now, what's been explained to me is that I need a router to stream to the device from whatever source I'm choosing and then contradicting info as to whether or not I need internet in order for it to work.
I don't have internet at home as I work 14 hour days and at work i do all my downloading etc and just use my iPhone as a hotspot at home when i need
My plan is this, as opposed to buying another storage device AND a router, I'm going to get myself a 2TB Time Capsule and use that as my router and to draw my entertainment from.
will this work? or do i REALLY need the internet ( which makes no sense at all-besides to activate home sharing-)for this all this to work?

and then while on the forum, any suggestions for adsl at home bearing in mind I don't have an existing phone line and won't need one for for a telephone either... purely for internet... perhaps I'm missing something here and there might actually be a viable option for me.

thanks

Hi L.T.G

I can clarify all this for you as I just moved this past weekend into a new flat without any ADSL connection at all and have successfully setup my Apple TV 2 to stream all my content either through iTunes Home Sharing or With Air Video (will explain more on Air Video shortly).

Basically the setup I had at my previous house was 2x 2TB's drives connected to my Mac and then linked to iTunes which I then viewed through Home Sharing. This worked excellently but it was a mission converting everything with Handbrake before adding it to my iTunes library. So I started using Air Video again and with the latest updates (including Airplay) it has become my primary way of watching all my media on my Apple TV. A ll you need to do is install the Air Video app on your iPhone or iPad and then downlaod the Air Video server app for your mac or PC. Once installed you select what folders / drives you want to connect with Air Video and after a few seconds (needs to verify with the server) you can view all your files and folders on your iPhone and then stream it to your Apple TV, there is no need to convert anymore as Air Video converts the files live while playing so basically your iPhone turns into a digital "GUIDE" if you wan to call it that.

With regards to ADSL connection, the only time you need to connect to the internet is for less than a minute when iTunes verifies your username and password with the Apple servers when turning on home sharing and for Air Video app to verify the connection betwee there servers and your phone, after that you don't need internet connection again.

The way I have it setup up now is my WiFi router plugged in (with no ADSL at all, literally the router and the power plugged in), my 2 2tb's drives connected to my mac and Air Video server. So far it is working like a dream, will give more feedback in a few days but have had no problems at all.

Let me know if you need any more info or if there is something I didn't quite explain correctly.
