Apple announced Tuesday that it has updated its high-end MacBook Pro laptops with faster processors, better graphics and more memory space.

The laptops are still available in three models: two 15.4-inch versions that retail for $1,999 and $2,499, and a larger, 17-inch edition that costs $2,799. But with Tuesday's update, the lower-end 15-inch model is now equipped with 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors (previously, it had a 2.16GHz chip); the higher-end 15-incher and the 17-incher now come with 2.4GHz processors, up from 2.33GHz. These new processors are indeed Intel's latest Centrino--or "Santa Rosa"--chips, which were introduced in early May.
All three MacBook Pros additionally now can be upgraded from 2GB to 4GB of RAM at extra cost, and have faster NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics cards designed for media-intensive animation and gaming.

should be, it's the mobile version of the P965.

One of the improvements is a 800Mhz FSB, which should help since Core 2 Duo's dont have onboard memory controllers and all I/O and memory traffic needs to travel through that link. AFAIK it also has improved power management features.

It will be nice to see the inevitable head-to-heads.

I've only had mine for a few months but I get the feeling I've yet to sufficiently tax it to a point where I'd want a faster machine . . . or maybe I'm just telling myself that in order to feel better :)
 
Where can I find/buy the cheapest 2.2GHz new MBP?

In SA? ZaStore when its available. Otherwise, I get a large portion of my hardware from Amazon.com and get associates, friends, or family to carry it over.

Amazon.com, ships hardware (ie.MBP) to ZA?, do you know if apple products work with an international warranty ?

They wont ship directly but there are numerous re-mailing services available should you not have access to relatives :)

All of apple's portable products including laptops come with worldwide warranties.

While I've never heard of that company it is a good price for the MBP.

Duties, taxes and customs - dunno. Never had to pay them but I'm sure you can call up SARS and they can tell you.
 
Thanks Bwana, I think I will rather get the less sexy Dell Inspiron, but I surely would like to import a few clothes & shoes, eg. niketown, gap, lacoste ect... the clothes here are cost way too much(vs. US) and a very little choice. And I am not sure, but I don't think Apple will release the iPhone here soon, gonna have to import that though.

$500 (3,573.35 according to www.xe.com/ucc) may sound heavy for a phone, but thats less than my Nokia 6230 went for when it just hit the market. When the iPhone launches in S.A. you'll probably get it free on contracts.

Why do you say that? They're not giving it away free on contracts in the States, why would they consider doing it here?
 
I'm guessing by the time it hits the S.A. market the price will have come down far enough. Might be years :-)
