I was unfortunate to experience a cracked glass, and was rudely awake by the fact that you can not repair and can only replace at the cost of a new watch. In my view it was a warranty repair, but went through the store (core) route and even to escalate it via apple.com. The manner in which it was manage is disappointing to say the least.
The bottom-line for me:

- Options for additional cover is not discussed
- No many insurance companies that cover this replacement
