Apple Watch thread

Have you decided to get the Ultra? I'm interested to know if you were successful in getting it through Discovery by paying in the difference. My SO was looking at the Ultra at iStore in Centurion but according to the lady that assisted her, one cannot get the Ultra with Discovery even if you pay in the difference. I called BS but she insisted. So would like to know if you were successful.
Waiting on Discovery to settle the balance of my Series 6, then going to do it.

I spoke to Discovery on the phone on Friday, to get settlement amount and to find out about it.

Basically, they cover up to R9 999.99 (Price of the Series 8 41mm GPS only) anything thereafter, you need to pony up and pay. Then the vitality payments will only reflect on the R9 999.99 balance.

Had a similar issue with daughters Series 3.

Solved eventually by using the 'manual' setup method (ie not scanning the screen and following the manual steps) and then ensuring that I was not restoring anything from an old backup.

It's a real pain in the ass when it doesn't 'just work'

Edit: another tip I read somewhere is if you are able to switch off BT on the watch then it's faster too.

Thanks

But to switch off BT on the watch, it needs to be paired and available?

Ya she’s not restoring anything. It’s going to be set up as brand new

That is how I understand it too. But the sales lady says any watch except the Ultra.

Thanks

Yeah, hence the 'if' - could possibly try switching off BT on the phone but I'm clutching at straws. I can't remember everything I tried and what eventually worked but I did get it to work eventually without having to reset the phone.

What phone did you try it on ?

Some people older phones work better . I'm wondering if I could pair / update on an old phone ... and then it would work

iPhone X - working happily now without issues.

If you can get it paired to an old phone (like a 7 or 8), ensure that its up to date, etc, then wipe and re-pair with the newer phone that might work.

Did you manage to go this route? Thinking of doing the same

Took 3 days for them to actually settle the vitality watch benefit, happened this morning. Then they said 24h later, I can activate the watch benefit again. So I guess I will find out tomorrow :)

I wonder, with the emergency calling - obviously in the States it calls 911, but in our country I suppose it will contact whatever you've defined as an emergency contact. Has anyone ever had their watch contact emergency services? Does it call anything other than your pre-defined contacts in your medical ID?

It calls your network’s emergency services, so on mine it calls 112, after which it notifies your defined emergency contacts.

Didn’t know the networks had emergency services. Does that actually notify police, ambulance etc of your location?

I found out with that post by triggering the SOS flow, and probably not cause it’s a strait up call which starts with the usual “some of our staff may be training”, cause of course the most important i need while half dead on the side of the road is a recorded message informing me of the ineffectiveness of the person whose going to answer.

Ja, damn. These features are awesome but we just don't have the emergency infrastructure like the US and others to actually rely on them. Hopefully choosing the right emergency contacts will help us the most if we ever need them because they can see our location. And then maybe call SAPS or armed response but doesn't help if we're unconscious.

I’m going to the US soon and was considering buying an Apple Watch while there. Anyone knows what the process is when buying an item like that overseas and bringing it to SA? I declare it at the airport and pay taxes again or get refunded for the US taxes paid?
