Telegram announces native app for the Apple Watch

Telegram has introduced a fully new native app for the Apple Watch. The release comes years after the messaging platform discontinued its original watchOS app, bringing dedicated smartwatch support back to the platform.

In an X post, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov announced the messaging client's return to the Apple Watch.

The new Telegram app for Apple Watch offers text and voice messages support. It also allows users to share GIFs, watch videos, share location, and stickers. The app also lets users access all their conversations and contacts.

After installing the app on an Apple Watch, users will need to scan a QR code from the Telegram app on their iPhone to sync contacts and messages.

No they didn't kill it. My watch will still work for years.
I have personal experience in this area. My first Apple Watch was a Series 3, which I used until 2025, even though Apple stopped releasing new watchOS versions for it in 2022. That’s three years without an upgrade … and it was fine.

look i just updated to os26 so I'm still impressed with it...wont be running out and buying unless its for the blood pressure function...

According to a new report from Counterpoint Research, Apple Watch shipments comfortably outpaced the rest of the smartwatch market during the first quarter of 2026. Here are the details.

In a report released today (via MacMagazine), Counterpoint Research says that while global smartwatch shipments grew 4% year-on-year during the first three months of 2026, Apple’s shipments surged 21%, reaching a 23% share overall.

Here's why Apple is already dropping support for so many watches in watchOS 27

At its Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month, Apple unveiled watchOS 27. This will be rolling out in the fall. Perhaps surprisingly, watchOS 27 will drop support for a lot of older Apple Watches, including the original Apple Watch Ultra, released in 2022. That device was the first Apple Watch to cost a whopping $799, so many owners may still be using it.

But come September, they will only receive essential security updates, as the watch is not getting watchOS 27. Asked why, Apple Watch and Health Product Marketing Manager Cait Dooley told TechRadar:

With every software release across every single one of our platforms, we always want to ensure that you have the best experience, so we make power and performance a priority.

The great new features in watchOS, including the capabilities of Siri AI and the new tap gesture, work best with the processing power that is in Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Ultra 2 and later, and SE 3. Older devices can still be paired with iPhones that are running the latest software and continue to receive security updates, so they can continue to have a great Apple Watch experience.

So there you have it - it's for your own good. Not a surprising response from Apple, but at least we now finally have one. So if you own an Apple Watch Series 8 or older, an original Apple Watch Ultra, or an older Apple Watch SE than the SE3, it's probably time to upgrade.
