Hi,

My wife is about to buy a 13" Macbook Pro. Much to my disappointment! JK. Long time Windows users, but the Apple hardware is wonderful -- I'd use it myself if I could. Anyway...

She'll buy it at the iStore, which I understand is actually Core. I'm fairly certain they'll try to badger her into buying AppleCare for the machine. Is it worth it? What exactly does it cover? Surely hardware failures and dead pixels, etc should be covered with a normal warantee? Is it simply an extended warantee? And will Core honour the service properly, or will she start having to deal with Apple in the US for decent service?

Much appreciated :)

I wasn't even made aware of Apple care when I bought my iMac a few weeks ago, so doubt they will badger her.

Apple Care is an extended warranty. No it's not worth it. Some people swear by it, but as with all extended warranties it exists because it is highly profitable to the company offering the warranty. Yes, you could be one of those people who is cursed by the gods, such that every product they buy blows up in some fashion or other after the normal 1 year warranty is up. Then it's worth it. But then that sort of person should be taking an extended warranty on everything.

The extended warranties sold at the iStores are not to be confused with Apple care. its called iCare and gives you 2 years extra warranty above the 1st year. This is a local only warranty meaning they will only hold the warranty if you take it to Core whereby apple care is a international warranty. All hardware problems are covered

Can u purchase apple care from the us online store and will it be honored by core in sa?

Well if it had a HP or Acer logo on it, you will need the Apple care, but I have seen only 3 Macs that did not make the 2 year period expected from IT devices. If you are a person who are heavy on devices I would go for the AppleCare package, but if you care about your products, IMHO I would skip. I think Apple products lasted long in the past and I think they have a quality product that will not leave you dry in the mouth after a few weeks.

I've had laptops from HP, Toshiba, Dell and Apple. They've all lasted years of regular use.

Well I work for a place selling HP and mostly Acer.
Non of the devices we sell go out the door without the extended warrantee. It is a basic matter of waiting for the device to break. And with the quality of Acer now, it will break. I had two DOA devices this week! One just did not start up anymore, and the other had a faulty keyboard.
