Apple's iPhone may be ready for its next big act—as a springboard into "augmented reality," a technology that projects life-like images into real-world settings viewed through a screen.
If you've heard about AR at all, it's most likely because you've encountered "Pokemon Go," in which players wander around neighborhoods trying to capture monsters only they can see on their phones. AR is also making its way into education and some industrial applications, such as product assembly and warehouse inventory management.
Now Apple is hoping to transform the technology from a geeky sideshow into a mass-market phenomenon. It's embedding AR-ready technology into its iPhones later this year, potentially setting the stage for a rush of new apps that blur the line between reality and digital representation in new and imaginative ways.
"This is one of those huge things that we'll look back at and marvel on the start of it," Apple CEO Tim Cook told analysts during a Tuesday conference call. Many analysts agree. "This is the most important platform that Apple has created since the app store in 2008," said Jan Dawson of Jackdaw Research.

With professionals looking at things like Surface Studio as the Mac moves ever further into college student space, it seems that the Mac will inevitably become irrelevant in the greater tech landscape.

Surface Studio - if you told me in 2010 that MS would build that instead of Apple I'd have laughed at you. So would a great number of people I'd wager.
 
Tim Cook Hints That Apple Is Working on Autonomous Systems – But Not Just for Cars

The rumors that Apple may be building an autonomous system received an update yesterday. During a conference call with investors on Tuesday afternoon, CEO Tim Cook hinted at the work Apple is doing with such systems as well as with artificial intelligence (AI).

“[Autonomous] systems can be used in a variety of ways,” Cook said. “A vehicle is only one, but there are many different areas of it. And I don’t want to go any further with that.”

There you have it, folks. While it seems that Apple may be building a vehicle — and even received approval to test one in Californian roads — what’s clear is that it’s developing an autonomous system that could be used in more than just cars. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, especially now that Apple has been actively pursuing AI development.

“We are very focused on autonomous systems,” Cook added. “We do have a large project going, and are making a big investment in this. From our point of view, autonomy is sort of the mother of all AI projects.”
