Hey. My friend is looking for some idea of the costs involved with creating a site that uses an auction type of sale similar to eBay or bid or buy.

Obviously there are many variables to consider but we would grateful for any input from any web developers.

It would require security/encryption to protect user details, provide the bidding interface and payment gateway.

Thanks in advance.

That being said I recently built a such a platform. Still have to hook in various gateways thou. Auction platforms are pretty trivial to build, I use various real time sockets with actor paradigm.

in my experience between 110-190k and about a 6 month dev period from what I know some guys charge

i'v had quotes from 5k to 1.5million for traditional ecommerce sites.

Impossible to give even an estimate based on your post details. Anyway, there are probably scripts you could buy to create your auction site, getting traction and interest into your site. Thats what i'd say 90% of your budget is going to go to.

Assuming you wish to compete with bidorbuy, thats a behemoth. They turn out nearly 1000 transactions...on a saturday night (i measured it once between 2 orders one at 9pm and the other at midnite). Just chew on that for a moment, 1000 orders in 3 hours. Can you imagine the sessions and traffic they have to achieve this.

Hope you have deep pockets if you want to do this.

1000 is barely anything, from a technical perspective.
