Approximately 400 stuck on Table Mountain as fire breaks out

About 400 people are currently stuck on top of Table Mountain due to a fire that broke out at the base station of the cable cart. Rescue efforts are underway to get them down. Table Mountain fire

Update: Firefighters have extinguished the fire and all visitors have safely been evacuated from the summit of Table Mountain.


According to Wahida Parker, managing director of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC), the fire broke out in the parking area of the lower station building.


‘Our fire-suppression system immediately activated to bring the flames under control, while our emergency- response plan kicked into action. The City of Cape Town’s Fire Services arrived to assist. Our focus is to ensure the safety of all visitors and we thank them for their cooperation.’

If you can't walk down table mountain, then going up with a cable car is always gonna be a risk
I wonder if there is a disclaimer for that somewhere

Why can't you walk down? Last time I check numerous routes are available. Might take you 6/8 hours...

There isn't, because it would be illegal.

One of the nice thing the cable car does is allows people who can't walk to appreciate the mountain.



Doesn't look like the cable car system itself was damaged.


“About 400 guests at the upper Cable Station were kept up there initially due to the thick smoke from the lower cable station. The backup power system has been activated and evacuation via cablecars has now commenced,” SANParks said.

Definitely is nice that it is wheelchair accessible, but not being able to get down if something happened to the cable car would be scary - I wonder what the backup solution is in case of something like that.

Literally
In South Africa, there is no charge for rescue services. So we urge everyone not to hesitate to call for help rather then trying to ‘rescue themselves’ in order to avoid a hefty fee and become a casualty while doing so.

Likely if people were stuck in relative safety at the restaurant or top building , the operator would probably charter a passenger helicopter to get people down.

All those disclaimers you see in supermarkets or anywhere else aren't even worth the cost of the sign since Rail Commuters Action Group vs Transnet 2004. Metrorail claimed they weren't responsible for commuter safety when Les van Minnen's son, Juan, was murdered on a train:

is this the famous Cape town fires I keep getting told about,
so if its nice and warm, eventually there will be a fire 100% guarenteed?

this place gets weirder by the day, rain in winter not summer, cold weather at any point in time,
droughts, fires, crazy winds out of nowhere, and freak floods whenever it gets too boring out here.

expect the unexpected I guess, maybe there will be a snowstorm or blizzard at some point as well.
