Apps cannot connect to the internet via work Wifi

Only the browsers can.

Anybody know of an app where I can enter the proxy details to allow apps to connect to the net as well?

You should have a setting for your WiFi under advanced where you can add the proxy settings. However, depending of the type of proxy, there might be something like Dual Authentication, which is a pain to get past on the Androids

I've added they proxy settings in there. That's how I know that I can connect with the browsers (FF and the stock browser), but for instance the Gmail app can't connect to the net

Ok, that sounds like double authentication. At previous company we had to run open WiFi (no Proxy), for the Execs and all their mobile toys due to the double authentication.
