So in January I had the itch to spend money, so I replaced my good old faithful D-link 2750U with an Archer D7. I've wanted one for years, figured it was time. The main reason was for the Wireless AC support on the 5GHz band, to use with the Steam Link.
It seems though that when the 5GHz band is under load for a long period, the router dies. I've replicated it many times. All I need to do is have my laptop and the steam link connected to the 5GHz band, and play a game for an hour+. Any time after an hour, the router completely locks up / crashes (it's hard to say what happens, all the usual lights are still on, no flashing or missing lights). Everything that was connected to wireless is dropped, and the AP's don't show up on my phone / laptop until I restart it.
This doesn't seem to happen on the 2.4GHz band, which is great, but it defeats the object of having the router IMO. I also lose bandwidth there, so lots of stuttering with the steam link.
I got in touch with TP Link support, but they were not helpful - even though they tried. I am really not sure if this is a design flaw (perhaps because of heat?), or if I just got a bad apple.
I have also tried turning off the 2.4GHz AP, so just the 5GHz is in use, and vice versa. It still died. I am wondering if I didn't have the 2.4GHz AP under load for long enough, but I hadn't had a chance to test it again.
Has anyone encountered something like this before?
