The annoying thing about MTN top-up is that they don't let you purchase data bundles with your monthly allocated airtime are other networks top-up contracts like this?

Nope.. Vodacom you can buy what you want... (or so it seems in my case).

Can you buy with the airtime that is allocated.
So if you on a R315 contract (or something like that) where you are given a rand value, can u use the money to buy data bundles.

With MTN u can't. They really suck but i am stuck with them cos of coverage.

Yes you can buy data bundles with the allocated airtime. I buy 600 megs every other month with my allocated R315.

You cannot buy sms bundles out of your cash on top up... no idea why not though. This used to be an issue till I got whatsapp.

I just checked - and I can
Code:
	SMS Bundle 20	Available	Activate	R 10.00
	SMS Bundle 50	Available	Activate	R 25.00
	SMS Bundle 100	Available	Activate	R 35.00
	SMS Bundle 200	Available	Activate	R 50.00
	SMS Bundle 300	Available	Activate	R 67.50
	SMS Bundle 500	Available	Activate	R 112.50
	SMS Bundle 1000	Available	Activate	R 225.00
	SMS Bundle 1500	Available	Activate	R 337.50
	SMS Bundle 2000	Available	Activate	R 450.00

A fact? Well, one of my lines is a Anytime 50 topup. You can buy bundles through *141*6#. Attempted to buy a 10 MByte bundle and I get the response:"You do not have sufficient airtime balance to purchase this bundle. Please load more airtime."

i always load 75mb with my allocated airtime on mtn topup 200

This is very strange. Perhaps MTN is applying different rules to different topup packages?
I'm on Anytime 50 off-peak topup. @Kgabogk, yours normal (peak) anytime topup?

+ 1 with 100 top-up

I got the same problem. It looks like a system fault

Sent an email ([email protected]), awaiting feedback :

Internet bundle in 3 easy steps not working :- saying “ You do not have sufficient airtime blance to purchase this bundle. Please load more airtime. “ - I have over R 500.00 of airtime.

I can't purchase data bundles with my allocated airtime. I've tried, I even went to the mtn shop and was told that I couldn't. On the web portal when I try it shows that I have no money available even though I still have.

Thats a fact!

I'm on TopUp 200 and i cant buy internet bundles with my R200 it just says "not enough airtime"

FACT! :p

When I was shopping around for a contract recently, I asked the MTN shop, and they clearly stated that they don't allow you to buy data bundles using your top-up airtime.

8ta also does not allow you to do this.

However, Vodacom and Cell C do allow this.

top up 200 on mtnzone

Did you load any additional airtime at any stage earlier in your contract?

Why I'm asking is because you can e.g. transfer airtime from a top-up contract as long as you have added additional prepaid airtime already. So maybe on yours the bundles are coming off previously loaded prepaid airtime?

this topic is also in the mtn forums, from the posts i do realise that some subscribers indeed can't load bundles using the allocated airtime, mtn should provide us with a good reason for this incosistancy

It makes sense that MTN would deny using allocated airtime to buy bundles. if they allowed it, Customers would stop buying Top-up contracts and bundles and instead buy more expensive contracts. The customers would then use the extra allocated airtime they get (that they would have spent on bundles anyway) on the bundles, while getting a much better phone for little extra charge
