Are BMW engines reliable?

+1 for the tyre costs. Unless you know someone, expect to pay 20k+ for those runflats (if the tyres are a 19”)

Yep. You get what you pay for. The thing is, as with most insurance, it's pretty much a waste of money until you really need it - and if you don't have it then you pay with an arm and a leg.
 
Sad end of this for me. My mechanic says there's been work done on the front bumper, bonnet, and some internals (something about swivel bearings, front axel wishbone bottom) but these weren't picked up by running the VIN with BMW. Cost me R1500 for the full check, but I think it's chump change as to what could've been

Something better will come. Have a look at the user cars on the BMW website - there may be something there that’s better and fits your budget.

Seller fixed the car unofficially and was trying to get rid of the car

No, hers was a once off payment and the only exclusion is tyres. Had a look and it's not BMW's official warranty but hey that's what they offered, and we haven't had to pay a cent for anything.

That’s the maintenance plan that your missus chose. Maintenance plan and warranty are two different things with BMW. It gets even more confusing cause there’s also a service maintenance plan.

If you want partial cover where you pay an (extremely high) excess (similar to insurance) you get the warranty with Motorite

If you just want to have your car serviced, you can get the service plan which will cover 3 services over 3 years (I think it’s like 8K)

If your vehicle is over 100k km and/or over 5 years and you want everything covered where you don’t pay extra (this includes services) then you get the maintenance plan. It can be extra time, extra mileage or both. Everything is covered except brakes and if it was accidental damage or an accident it may not be covered.

I have a 320i that I have had since 2009 (2007 model) and it costs me on average R10k to R15k a year between services, repairs, maintenance and tires.

Resale on it is less than R50k. I cant replace it for that. The only issue I'm having is that you cant see the display on the radio when it gets hot. Other than that its good.
I also have a F800gs that is just about to hit 100k km. Also in perfect condition.

IMHO, they're great engines.
