Are Celeron processors as bad as they used to be?

Celerons are perfectly capable.
They're usually just paired with useless e-waste laptops with 4 or 8gb of ram and an EMMC storage chip.

Rather spend a bit extra otherwise you will regret it in the long run.

Celeron have always been garbage.

I believe that celerons or quite a few of them anyway were cut to be higher end chips then had a core/cache issue so were just used to manufacture lower end cpu's

I think Celeron chips are perfectly capable for the vast majority of people, but they will annoy the snot out of you in very short order by just being a bit slow, and unresponsive at times.

Step up to an i3 if you can put together just a bit more cash for one.

I think for most people's cases it would be RAM and storage, my wife has an I5-11354G from about 2 years ago, it felt like crap running 8GB and an HDD, slap in 16GB slightly faster memory and 1TB ssd, thing flies.
So if people do go for new laptops SSD and more RAM is important.

Oh no questions, my missus has a 5 yr old i3, and it had 4GB of ram and a POS spinning disk, did a bit of an upgrade on both of those and its infinitely better, but it still has its moments where it looks at you like you're fscking stupid...

Yeah those older I3s weren't great, I've still got one laying around the house I want to put an SSD in and some DDR3 RAM, its' like 10 years old now sadly.

Lol. Imagine slapping a nvme into a beginner's pc/laptop...

Will give it the biggest speed boost, of anything you can put in it. Tho you are unlikely to get the best out of that NVME, that it has to offer.

Was very surprised, by the speed boost on my 10 year old Lenovo i5 laptop. Pity cannot do anything with it's screen.

That is 100% a windows bloat thing for the most part.... though even linux runs faster on an SSD if you have the right brand (avoid Samsung & Linux combos like the plague).

I was surprised at how slow modern Linux can be on a slow HDD but it's fine on 72k RPM which you cannot say for windows.

N Celerons for laptops are painfully kak, the G Celerons for desktops are x100 better.

i3 with SSD and at least 8Gb RAM is ok.

What do you mean by this? Samsung SSD doesnt work well with linux?
They are notorious for bugs that never get fixed but oddly people seem to only find out about this when it hits them.... like it did me.... a wonderful little problem where the partitions become corrupt because they get overwhelmed by a file transfer qeue that bottlenecks.

It was assumed that this was only the case with old drives but then it started popping up again with 980's and 970's.

Also, 7.2k RPM drive not 72k RPM.
+1

Are Celeron processors as bad as they used to be?

Yes.

There's no upgrading those celeron laptops and if you spend 1.5k more you'd have a SIGNIFICANTLY faster i3/r3 laptop.

I've seen way too many people get burned by buying a celeron laptop and within 6 months end up being told that they'll have to replace it. It breaks your heart to see a brand new looking laptop in perfect condition, condemned for destruction as it's just too shite to use for just about anything.

Can you "type a few letters" on there?
Yes.
However, it'll be very frustrating.

There just isn't a good enough justification for the celeron line's existence other than to fill greedy company's pockets and screwing over the clients who buys these out of ignorance and being bamboozled by unscrupulous salespeople.

She found a deal with i3 / 8GB RAM / 256GB SSD deal that she got.

Thanks!
Which gen i3? Some 10th gen i3 models can be as slow as Celerons according to benchmarks. Try to compare them on cpubenchmark.net

I think it’s 11th gen.

I think all in all, decent budget PC

May I ask what brand and how much she paid? Just curious.

Should be fairly decent over the long term compared to the current Celeron range.

There certainly aren't any 10th gen I3's that Celerons even come close to.

Even the I3 1005G1 is a fair bit faster than the current Celeron range.
