i just checked out the new Hyundai ix35 there is one with a sun roof that i am keen on .
are sun roof's generally a good idea.any horror stories of water leakage etc since we are having lots of rain these days.

many thanks for the replies

I loved my sunroof that was after-market fitted to my Corolla RXI.
It was especially useful when I still smoked.
It never leaked, jammed or gave any hassle.

It had a panel that could be slided out under the sunroof glass to "close the window", so that the noon sun does not bother you on long trips, and you could have it open at 12 degree's at the same time to get the fresh air benefit. "Closing it" is necessary, even with the 60% tint on the glass, the sun still packs a punch.

Remember to have some means of closing it (outside the car), realising that the sun-roof is still open after you've locked up is a nuisance, I had mine wired to the remote control to close it.
Of course, it cost a damn fortune to fit, and it has to be properly lubricated every 12 months.

For the extra airiness in the car, it was awesome.
But, for the people who want to stand up through the sunroof, that's a really stupid idea, you get all kinds of bugs stuck in your teeth.

I got a quote on my RunX at R10,000 - and that was in 2006.

However that was a decent Toyora approved one - sounds like Daves.

PS I've had 4 cars and my current is the only with a sunroof. I'm always going to get from now on

I have one and I love it. It came with the car so I don't know how much it is extra, just don't forget that you opened it. I get surprised by rain often.

When we deiced to get my wife a new car I was surprised to find out that a lot of manufactures don't offer them any more, something to do with the stability of the car and crumple zones.
Its a pity, but then I would not recommend getting a aftermarket one.

Sunroof's are a MUST have! Next car i'm getting MUST, absolutely MUST have a sunroof...BUT...just close it everytime you leave the car unatended for some time...my friend always leaves his open, like tilted, and when it rais he'll have to wipe the dash and pleather seats in the Mazda 6...

like I said, its a must, and gives any car that COOL look

This precisely the reason why the 'optional extra' sunroof is so expensive to add to your new car purchase. As I understand, factory fitted moonroofs have extra strengthings in the car's chassis and roof to compensate for the hole in the roof. I'm not sure if a aftermarket one has the same strengthening...

On Seat Leons you can activate that it automatically closes the sunroof and windows when it senses rain and you've left it open... Quite a cool feature.

Thanks guys for the response you have been awesome.Yes its a cool feature

A sunroof is a must. I've heard that the after sale one is not a good idea though. So have it as an optional extra in a new car or buy a second hand with a factory fitted one.

What cars don't offer them? Maybe the smaller cars? I remember my RunX didn't have the option.

They must come from the factory and offered optional because of the rigidity. Most cars are R4k to R7k optional - with up to R14k for the panaramic.

HOWEVER the after market recommended to me was R10k - more than most charge optional - hence I never got it.

Soz, got distracted by work, it was about R9500 for the sunroof in 2007.

I forgot the most important part:
I you leave the car in the hot sun, having the sunroof open a few degree's lets out the hot air, AWESOMENESS.

had one in my golf and now in a bmw
left both tilted in the rain and didnt really get wet, maybe a few drops but nothing major
