Are Telkom giving modems without 2 year contract?

A friend informs me that if you order ADSL you get a 5102G included, but no 2 year contract. Can anyone confirm this?

yip... ordered my adsl on wednesday and got a free modem without havin 2 sign a contract... someone else also mentioned it was in the newspaper too yesterday....

My adsl was installed on the 6th of feb, i didnt get a free modem!?!?!?!

The special probably started this week I think cause they only then advertised it yesterday... maybe phone them and ask if you still can get one?

It seems to be only for Self-Install

Self Install Option (SIO)

D.I.Y. Broadband DSL?

You want Telkom's flagship Broadband product, DSL, with all its exhilarating speed and exciting benefits, but don't want to wait for an appointment with the installation technician?

Don't despair, Do-It-Yourself is the future!

Telkom's DSL self installation option (SIO) allows you to take care of the part of the DSL installation that takes place on your premises yourself, enabling you to get service quicker than before. Not only that but you save R437.50 on the installation fee and get a free DSL modem. Simply access the minimum PC requirements on this website at "What you require to set up DSL" which will guide you to download a PC minimum requirements test.

Thereafter order your DSL service from the nearest direct shop or via 10219, wait a few days for Telkom to contact you to inform you to proceed with SIO thereafter you can collect your FREE modem from any direct shop or have it Home/Office delivered.

Order an ADSL Internet account from your Internet service provider of choice, connect the micro-filter to the phone line, connect the side named Line into the wall side, not modem side, connect the modem power and the network cable into your PC, switch on and run the start up software from the disc provided with the modem. You will be required to verify your DSL connection which will activate the billing after 7 days of installation. The verification process is built into the start-up software but if you run into a glitch open the web browser and type www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl into the address bar. Enter your telephone and order number in the fields provided and click verify. You will be taken through a verification process and should be able to surf the net within 30 minutes.

Choose your modem
You have the choice of a USB or a WiFi modem with 4 Ethernet ports

Telkom is up to something and I don't think it's going to be good for anyone
No one gives away something for free without getting something back in return.

yea, I am still waiting to see what the 'catch is' this sounds too good to be true.. i mean self install is like R200 odd and with a free ADSL modem/router its free in fact more than free.. somethings not right. well not Telkom right..

I think if you think bout it, Point 1: if they give you a free modem (Wifi bout R700) and you doing the self-install, ur actually directly reducing the time it takes for you to be up and running with ADSL but also indirectly reducing the time for them to start billing you and getting money out of you for your ADSL subscr.

Point 2: They might be scared that if you wait so long for your ADSL, you might opt to go to MTN or somewhere else

Point 3: With Neotel coming out soon and Telkom giving stuff for free, maybe its an indication of more price reductions etc from Telkom to keep us? lol

Thats what I think anyway lol.......:p

You made some good points spikey24
Lets see how much we get %$#$ over in the coming months.

think i'll have to give telkom a call. did a self install on the 26th Jan and didnt get no free modem. There's also no date mentioned in the article - so maybe we can all claim free modems :)

I also think it makes sense for them to do this, plus they have those modems in huge bulk and probably want to get rid of them anyway.

I think you're being a little bit over skeptic, I doubt theres any conspiracy here :p

What is a R500 modem if you get signed up a month or two quicker and it makes their product even more attractive?

Very true, they probably recover the cost of the modem in the second month of line rental, the first month covering the DSLAM and from there profit all the way...

Well, I can confirm that the modem (picked up a Mega 100WR) is free and that you aren't bound to any sort of repayment terms. They did ask when I did the self-install (last week) so I suspect their 'generosity' only goes back so far.

I can confirm it as well. I ordered an upgrade from Closer 2 to Closer 4 on Friday afternoon and picked up my self install kit from the Telkom shop in Menlyn, Pretoria on Saturday morning at no extra cost. The kit includes:
+A Mega 100WR ADSL 2+ ready router with 4 ethernet ports and a WiFi AP
+Two microfilters
+All necessary cabling
+Installation CD and a really well put together quick start guide that gives exactly the right amount of information to get set up

Service on 10219 was quick, helpful and efficient, as was the in-store help. I spent the entire weekend feeling like I was in the twilight zone, and waiting for Telkom to call me up and tell me they made a mistake-or that thanks to the fine print they now own my soul and I'll be spending the rest of my existence serving them..

All I have to wait for now is my line to be enabled at the exchange.
