Are you going to keep using windows XP?

I still keep my copy around for those rare occasions when I need a piece of software that doesn't work in compatibility mode. But I'd never use it as my daily system. It feels cumbersome and downright archaic whenever I go back to it now.

Why can't Microsoft transfer the licence key from xp to Windows7/8?
What about from Windows 3.0 to Windows 8? It might have something to do with their being a company that sells software.

I will keep it that way until the vendor stops being stupid and writes a decent C compiler that runs on Linux.
How likely is that? Most the tools I've encountered work only on Windows.

I am not going to touch any of the newer versions of Windows, I am sorry, they broke the USB implementation (the CDC class no longer works properly) and too many other things are so different it means re-writing stuff that has been certified and proven since Windows '98.
I'm surprised things even work across that many versions.

anywhere!!!

last i checked 7 ultimate was about R1400. well worth it if you want a legal stable OS to do all your
tinkering with!

Yup,
Or you can purchase a new laptop/desktop with win8 OEM and downgrade.

Just cant get Civilization (the first one) to work on Win 7 (32bit - don't even bother with 64bit) or even a Win XP VM. Works grand on a old laptop with Win XP, so win XP will stay (hope the laptop doesn't die soon) around in my house.

I ditched windows xp the moment windows 7 released. Been happy with Windows 7.

Why on earth would you still be stuck with xp when there is w7?

Please say "Challenge accepted"?

I don't see any reason as to why the average consumer cannot continue using Windows XP, for the reasons you pretty much gave. Enterprises that still use it, however... they are stuffed.

From what I heard on security now podcast Enterprise updates are being sold by MS for XP.

" I know over in the U.K. several large organizations have paid lots of money for the privilege of continuing to receive the XP patches which the rest of us won't be getting any longer. So Microsoft is now turning their vulnerabilities into a revenue stream for the first time."

Fire XP up every now and then in a virtual machine, to open infected docs and mail to see what spammers and malware-infecters are up to... But use Win8.1 on all production/home systems.

2 x XP machines one windows 7 machine and one windows 8 machine , and i will carry on using windows XP for the foreseeable future.

That's how it should be. It's not Microsoft's fault for instance that some compiler or other tool maker hasn't bothered to update their software, nor that some company still using XP has not done whatever they need to move off XP.

Because Win7 has a really crap file manager, and a really crap search function that is even worse than that of XP, which is saying something.

And I have no idea why someone says you can't use XP for online banking and shopping - I do one or both every day.

People get in such a froth about using a newer OS: an OS is there to enable the applications you use, for 90% of the time: Win7 is really no better for me than XP at that, and Win8 just makes everything a pain.

I figure people just like Win7 because it is such a relief after Vista - like stopping bashing your head into a brick wall.

Riveting argument. I'll downgrade immediately for the file manager and search.

Good for you. You won't look back. :p

Seriously though, what does Win7 buy you personally over XP?

Better support for the latest hardware/software...
Enhanced security features...
Ease of use and troubleshooting...

Thanks for the answer.

- on hardware, well, I have XP running fine on several systems with no issues, including an i5 and an i7, so I don't buy or need that
- on software, well, only MS stuff that they force not to run on older OSs - half of them with those dreadful ribbon things. My own programs run just fine.
- security features? Other than future lack of security updates, I don't see that. Do you mean like that ghastly UAC and Security Centre ( in XP - is it still in Win7 - I forget )?
- ease of use - rot! Troubleshooting? I don't have many troubles. The one thing it does do well is find drivers - I will give it that.
