When I first saw the Star Trek USB Communicator I wondered to myself ‘Self, how geeky can one get and still make sales’, yet sales they are a-making!

Firstly, to the hyper addicted Star Trek fan, this is something that every household has to have by Narknoff law. However to the rest of us, there is good old fashioned hype.

When the second string of Star Wars movies were released in the US there were hundreds if not thousands of hyped up fans spending the night waiting in line for movie tickets, while here in South Africa we had posters! Or should that be a poster?! Either we dont seem to get the whole idea about hype or we dont know how to create hype. Whichever it may be, while we are shaking our heads the Star Trek USB Communicator is turning heads in the US.

So while some are going bankrupt trying to get their hands on one and others are making millions selling their S.T.U.C. – unopened, unused and signed by Spock’s grand son’s neighbour’s friend, we are wondering where we [or rather they] went horribly wrong.

And if that is not enough to make you wonder about the condition of manking, the price tag of R450 has got to make you think that this human race of ours can be morbidly odd at the best of times!
