A bomb was deactivated outside a municipal building in Westonaria on the West Rand, Gauteng police confirmed on Tuesday.

According to officials, the bomb was found by a security guard at the weekend.

The bomb disposal unit was called to the scene.

The explosives were found in a plastic bag near a rubbish bin on Saturday morning. Police said that the device was made of the same explosives used to blast rock in underground mines.

"The security guard was doing an inspection and then he noticed a plastic [bag]. He went to check what was inside only to find that it was a bomb," said the police's Thembi Masango.

Not far from me, questions are, why bomb in quotations? Miners fedup with municipalities?

They used water gel blasting cartridges, and shock tubes. Perhaps that's why they called it a "bomb". It's still pretty dangerous.

Although, it's not that useful in open areas. It's made for enlarging holes (well, digging shafts).
