Durban - A group of University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) students who were arrested during protests at the institution were granted bail of R200 each on Wednesday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.

NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara said the 13 students were charged with a range of crimes, including assault, possession of a dangerous weapon, public violence, convening a gathering without notice, attending an illegal gathering, failing to comply with a police order and interference with police duties.

Police had previously indicated that 16 people had been arrested.

The matter was adjourned until October 19 for further investigation.

The students were arrested following violent protests at the UKZN Westville campus on Monday night. Police said six vehicles were burnt on the campus and a building was set alight.

On Tuesday, police dispersed a crowd of around 30 students who were chanting struggle songs at the Westville campus. Students reported being tear-gassed. A small fire in a bin had to be extinguished.

Following the torching of the Howard College law library on Tuesday night more violence erupted.

The university's Howard College and Pietermaritzburg campuses experienced violent student protests, with groups of students being dispersed by officers firing rubber bullets in some cases.

On Tuesday last week, the Howard College coffee shop was set alight, while the Pietermaritzburg main exam hall went up in flames a day later.

So not one of them were charged with destruction of property? Burning cars and buildings?

Must be real nice knowing that you can destroy or burn other people's property with impunity, and not get prosecuted for that... :wtf:

It probably helps to have a 1000 buddies outside willing to burn even more stuff to make sure nothing happens to you.

ANC likens UKZN student protest to Nazi Germany

JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) has likened the burning of books at the University of KwaZulu-Natal to Nazi Germany, when Adolf Hitler ordered books to be destroyed.

A statement has been released by the party, calling on university students and staff to reject violence.

It says the burning of books and university infrastructure has no justification when calling for free education.

I don't think they can just randomly charge anyone with whatever they want. The police have no way of knowing who was and who wasn't involved in the destruction. It could've been all or none of the arrested students.

So charge all of the fsckers then do the investigation

These criminals need to start getting a taste of the real world

Mmm... Not a cop but I don't that's how it works either. Investigation first then charges, not charges then investigation.

Tbh the balance of probability means they were involved even if it was peripherally... By not stopping the arsonist they may be classed as an accomplice..

But regardless of that these criminals actually need a fscking wake up call

I wonder if they could not charge them with conspiracy? That involves a much lower burden of proof.

They will, karma. :-) no one evetually gets away with crime. Imagine what your parents or your children will think about this.

Now you're just throwing sh*t at the wall and hoping something sticks.

The message is clear: The state is virtually powerless to protect universities, school, hospitals, medics, nurses, communications infrastructure, general state infrastructure, army/navy base weapons supplies, police weapons supplies, and of course civilians. Yet, the state has the power to protect Zuma, the Guptas, VIP's, politicians, politicians' residences and Luthuli House.
