JOHANNESBURG - Eight students who were arrested at Wits University this week have now been released on a warning, pending an investigation.

The protesting students were handcuffed during the Fees Must Fall protests which have disrupted universities across the country.

The magistrate has released the eight students on a warning and has set the date for their next appearance on 2 November.

This nonsense won't stop unless these guys get sent to jail.

Aggravated assault for attacking someone with a brick, deserves 5 years.

Petrol bomb deserves at least 10 years.

They shud be jailed.. expelled from university. we cannot have thugs like them working for companies

They're warned to appear in court on the due date. It's like being on bail but with no money involved.

But is it appropriate to let someone involved in serious violence out on a warning ?

Shouldn't they stay in jail until they appear in court ?

Wits students are being treated nicely... Any news on UKZN11?

It's really weak from the judge or the state prosecution. They should have argued that there is a real risk that this students will continue to cause more damage and should remain in jail until their next court appearance.

Trade certificates are the new degrees these days.

These countries have produced too many academics and not enough tradesmen to build up their expanding infrastructure.

In many cases, tradesmen are earning more cash in hand than the doctors and lawyer types in these countries.

The problem is that the FETs are in an appalling state. They're corrupt, have no competent teachers and just a mess. My cousin was at an FET college and he told me how lecturers are selling exam papers and in one case they had a maths exams printed, one page was in Afrikaans and most of the equations weren't properly formatted using an equations tool meaning you could make heads or tail of what the question intended.

I wonder why most companies closed their trade training centres. The SOEs used to run very good training centres and even the Eskom one in Midrand has been closed or outsourced.

I think the skills development levy caused this. Companies had a budget for skills development which is now going to government after the introduction of the levy.
