Article: BBC defends Mexico jokes on Top Gear

I must actually say... in this particular case, that if I was Mexican I would have been offended at those comments. They went too far and are in effect, racist comments.

By drawing attention to the comments they are going to attract far more negative publicity whilst boosting Top Gear's ratings.

In the show, during a discussion about a sports car made by Mexican firm Mastretta, presenter Richard Hammond said vehicles reflected national characteristics.

"Mexican cars are just going to be lazy, feckless, flatulent, overweight, leaning against a fence asleep looking at a cactus with a blanket with a hole in the middle on as a coat," he said.

In Mexico, a spokesman for Mastretta Cars -- a new high-end sportscar presented at the Paris Auto Show -- said the program was unexpected positive publicity for the firm.

"We were not prepared for this... the Top Gear program has given us publicity in Mexico and abroad that we could not have paid for," Carlos Sandoval , a spokesman for the firm, told AFP.

There's no such thing as bad publicity. :D If the "Mexican ambassador to London" wants to take offence, let him. Nothing happens...

It was racist yeah but all that publicity...? Shrug it off Mexico. They didn't really mean it.

Like I would complain if someone called me ugly and stupid then handed me a million bucks.

soooo, racist jokes are not racism?

It's all OK as long as we laugh?

Depends, you can make a race related joke without being racist. Remember the Castrol "They all look the same" advert with boet, swaar & the black dude.

Took me a while to get it but when I did I thought it was helluva funny.

It's like calling a mate a dumb ****. It's funny because you wouldn't be friends with him if he was a dumb ****.

Honestly, it just ruins the joke when you have to explain it to some dumb ****.

LOL, Clarkson has pissed of the Mexicans... again :D

Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson today fuelled the row over 'racist' remarks about Mexicans by further insulting them in his newspaper column.

While the BBC faced calls to apologise over comments on the motoring show last week which saw co-host Richard Hammond describing Mexicans as 'lazy, feckless... and flatulent', Clarkson accused them of having no sense of humour.

In his Sun newspaper column today, the host attempted to make the point that without offensive humour, there can be no jokes.

In doing so, he quoted jokes about various nations - including Britain - to tailor his argument.

He wrote: '...there are calls in Britain at the moment for all offensive humour to be banned. But what people don't realise is that without offence, there can be no jokes.'

Despite earlier apologising for the show's 'feckless' comments, the loud mouth host then ended the column with his own joke about Mexicans: 'Mexico doesn't have an Olympic team... because anyone who can run, jump or swim is already across the border.'

He added that 'at one point on Wednesday we were receiving 200 complaints from Mexico every minute'.

*leprosy, but yes I had that clip in mind - I just thought I perhaps shouldn't post the same clip I've posted a dozen times before. The repetition might've offended someone...

Quite a sexy little car, actually. Looks like a new Renault Megane Coupé had a night of passion with a Noble:

...and I wouldn't even know about it if not for Clarkson & co.

Top Gear would actually have to be worth watching these days before it's ratings could be boosted. They seem less interested in the cars and more interested in seeing who they can piss off this week.

It's not as bad as the one Rush Limbaugh made about the Chinese a few weeks ago.
