Article: Conservationist defends Rhino hunt

They are just looking for easy money ... even if it is for a good cause. I don't like it.

I don't see how it's easy money when they need to run a game farm and raise an animal that poachers are trying so hard to get their hands on to get it.

I'll admit I'm nervous about any rhino being shot legally especialy as there are so many being killed per year, but the places that keep and protect the animals need funding.

There is many other animals that can be shot to raise money. Leopards and Rhino's is not some ot those.

The hunter should also only be armed with a pointy spike. Then they will be on equal footing! :D

There will always be problem animals ..rather let some one hunt them for money than just cull them ..these are my thoughts on this subject ( i dont like people hunting endangered animals )

Commercialisation of conservation is almost certainly the way forward. That would include allowing harvesting of horn for sale.

But we first have to have a population of Rhino. But yeah. If we can get it to where the Velvet antlers is It would be awsome. I just do not think the rhino's horn grows that quickly.

I'd have to confirm, but I think a friend who has been researching this for conservation organisations said it grows a foot per year. I've seen harvesting every two years mentioned elsewhere.

Seriaas?

White Rhinoceros
On its snout it has two horns. The front horn is larger than the other horn and averages 90 cm (35 in) in length and can reach 150 cm (59 in).
Black Rhinoceros
Two horns on the skull are made of keratin with the larger front horn typically 50 cm long, exceptionally up to 140 cm.

I've read elsewhere it takes three years for the horn to grow back completely. I don't know if they were referring to white or black rhino, but 30 cm (1 foot) per year would correspond to the 90cm stated for white rhino.

When at the Kruger in December I saw quite a few rhinos with... rather large..... horns.... easily in excess of .... I would have thought that they are about 50cm, but since Wiki says 90cm on average, it could have been well larger. Some were really massive.

Awsome! Lets start Breeding Rhino's. Now we just have to get the idiots to give us a chance to breed them.
