Johannesburg - ANC Youth Leader Julius Malema has spoken out against "misrepresentations and lies" spread through newspapers, and has clarified allegations against him.
The Youth League called a media conference on Monday after media reports that Malema's lavish lifestyle was being bankrolled by lucrative government contracts awarded to companies he has interests in.
The Sunday Times reported that Malema's companies were awarded more than 20 contracts, worth between R500 000 and R39m between 2007 and 2008.
Malema said he was not going to "dignify these misrepresentations and lies" with comment, but said he needed to clarify allegations so that ANC supporters are not fed wrong and misleading information.
Nothing to hide
Malema said he has nothing to hide, and wanted to "put the record straight".
He added that he had resigned from all companies he was involved in when he assumed his position as president of the ANCYL in 2008, and has not been involved in any illegal tender processes.
He pointed out that his property is being financed by a bank loan, and that he owns one car - a Mercedes Benz C63. He also mentioned that his salary is more than R20 000 per month, as reported.
Malema threatened to take legal action over the allegations against him.
The media conference was also used as an opportunity to clarify the ANCYL's policy on the nationalisation of mines.

If this is true, we all owe Julius an apology!
