Article: Motorist arrested while probing speed camera

The driver of a silver Ford Fiesta seemed surprised when he was flashed by the speed camera driving at 163km/h on the freeway and turned back to investigate where the light came from, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

The man found that the camera had been set up by metro police officers who were at the spot.

The officers arrested him immediately for speeding.

The incident happened after another 37-year-old man was arrested earlier for driving his BMW at 214km/h along the same route.

The man told the officers that he was from a party in Johannesburg and rushing home because his wife wanted to know why he was out in the early hours of the morning.

The two were part of 13 motorists who were arrested for speeding during an operation between 9pm on Saturday night and 4am on Sunday.

They were each released on R500 bail.

The drivers are expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.

What a mampara! Firstly, anyone who thinks it's a good idea to stop on the N1 in Midrand in the middle of the night, no matter what the reason, deserves what's coming to him.

Secondly, what else could the flash have been but a speed camera? What did this guy think he was going to do once he found the source of the flash? Destroy the camera? The mind boggles.

You're forgetting dewey, that you have every right to inspect the camera and the credentials of the operator of the camera. Our cops need to stop hiding in the bushes taking pictures and make themselves more visible on our roads or we won't see much change in our pretty pathetic accident rates

... must say, I agree with your first statement

I completely agree with you. I just think it's nuts that somebody would stop on the N1 in the early hours of the morning to inspect a flash of light. Either this guy has balls of steel and is probably up to no good, or he's completely naive.

Or maybe he thought it was little green men.

Huh . . . Is it so dangerous to stop on N1 at night? What if you get a puncture? 9mm 9mm where are you :D

On the N1 at midrand? But there are no warnings of trapping there so this isn't legal right?

No it is not. Haven't seen a camera there ever, but there is also no camera signs around there either.

Based on the article above

The officers arrested him immediately for speeding.

He was not arrested for "inspecting" the camera but in fact because he returned to the speed trap where he was arrested for his speed...

Kinda makes sense, you speed, you return to the scene of your crime, they arrest you... If he had just carried on going there most probably would have been a warrant issued since he is above the admittance of guild fine.

but on a more serious note than my earlier posts...

I can't see the need to go over 160km/h unless you have a "popping" pregnant woman or a dying person & then only if there are no other vehicles on the road with you.
