Article: Oysters disappearing worldwide: study

There are several areas around where I live where I can get oysters off the rocks. Ill never tell a vaalie where the secret spots are. All the well known spots are bare from being over-harvesting.
 
Not good news for oceanic health in general, the decline of one species causes the decline of others.

As a keystone species, oysters provide habitat for many marine species.

Crassostrea and Saccostrea live mainly in the intertidal zone, while Ostrea are subtidal.

The hard surfaces of oyster shells and the nooks between the shells provide places where a host of small animals can live.

Hundreds of animals such as sea anemones, barnacles, and hooked mussels inhabit oyster reefs.
Many of these animals are prey to larger animals, including fish such as striped bass, black drum and croakers.

An oyster can filter up to 5 litres (1.3 US gal) of water per hour.

Chesapeake Bay's once flourishing oyster population historically filtered excess nutrients from the estuary's entire water volume every three to four days.

Today that would take nearly a year. Excess sediment, nutrients, and algae can result in the eutrophication of a body of water.

Oyster filtration can mitigate these pollutants.

I don't mean to sound racist but, I remember Toti rocks being blanketed in oysters and mussels. After non whites were allowed onto the beaches those rocks have been scraped clean of everything. It's the same everywhere now

Careful now, when Europeans first came to this land, they mowed down thousands upon thousands of buck and wildlife, leaving the meat rotting in heaps, shipped away thousands of ivory tusks of elephants and massacred rhino.. tsk tsk.
 
So foreigners as well as locals are dumbasses. I feel so alone in this world being the only smart one. It's not easy being me :(

Reminds me of that episode were people were scraping it off the rocks with spades. Think it was on 50/50 or Carte Blanche.

As for who's the culprit, I can't say but the place on KZN south coast where my folks have a place had its rocks literally jam-packed with mussels during the 80's. That's how I remember it and I thought that maybe my mind was exaggerating my childhood memories but old photos at the hotel there confirmed it. You couldn't walk on those rocks because of how sharp they were with the black shells. Now, although the place has still managed to retain its beauty to a large extent, those rocks too are completely bare. You get li'l limpets and such but the only mussels you can see are young ones growing in very inaccessible patches.

Quite sad!

Trust me the "whitey" does just as much damage and leaves litter as well.
Along the wild coast - we used to have plenty of mussels and oysters, now along come's vaalie and takes everything back in freezer or jars.
Same story with the fish in the 80's and 90's - Jis it will never finish.

Where there used to be about 10 mussel women - there are now 50+ with kids that don't go to school, and the same thing "feed me, guvment has forgotten about me"
But 'ill still go stand in the hot sun for hours and vote the same people in 'cause chief says so.
When asked why they were not in school - No Teacher.......and there is a new school built by EU nearby.
One wonders what will happen when there is nothing, not even limpets to scrape off the rocks - suppose affirmative shopping will be on the cards.
