President Jacob Zuma on Saturday presented a report on how the country had implemented an African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) programme of action at an African Union meeting, the presidency said.

"This report showcases progress made in the past two years in the country in social, economic and political spheres," said presidential spokesman Zizi Kodwa.

He said that the report -- the second of its kind -- stated that the country had become "a well-functioning democracy in a comparatively short space of time since the first historic general elections of 1994".

"It outlines achievements in several areas of governance as well as the successful hosting of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup."

say what???

They must be joking. The lovely Constitution is backward. The place is rife with corruption from the leader of the country all the way down to the people on the street, why anyone in their right mind would want to follow what we have done is beyond me. Money flows out of the country instead of being used in it.

ANC govt, brilliant at finding really low standards to compare themselves to...

Nologic, rather stick to your name. Corruption is to democracy as cancer it to healthy living.

In other news, the Wild Fox Governing Body has stated that its independent investigation of alleged chicken coop thefts by foxes has conclusively revealed no fox involvement.

This report is a steaming pile of horsehooey.

As long as the ANC exists there will never be a true democracy in SA. The DA which exist for the minorities in SA is not a factor.
What South Africa needs is another truly black party that is just as strong as the ANC I'm not saying this because I don't want mixed parties. It's just a fact that black people are the most in SA so for there to be a true democracy in SA, democracy should exist among themselves. As long as there is just 1 black party and a party for the fewer "others" SA politics will just be a one-party system with a veneer of democracy.

Conversation overheard on a little island called, Shortsighted.

The masses: we want free houses, free health, free education, free water, and welfare for our children
The minority: we want to build a nuclear power station so that we will have power to remain a modern country
Mr Democracy : you will have free houses, free health, free water
Mr Future: erm..erm.. oh crikey - replicate bows and arrows so long, we have a problem coming up

talk to us again in another ten years and we'll compare notes on our lovely democracy! :p

Except on voting day how many times have the citizens in South Africa changed policy? How many referendums have we held to change policies and when it come to public comment/participation how many of these have been held and what was the outcome of these matters?

Not sure what you mean by the above. Here in Australia it is apparently a democracy and seems to function, but we get the opportunity to choose between tweedledee and tweedledum every three years, both of whom give the impression from their makeup that Australia is still anglo saxon when it now has 30% overseas born plus of course the descendants of those. In my 20 years here we have only had one referendum (i.e. non election public participation) and that was just whether we should "have a think about changing from monarchy to republic"...the answer was "no" by the way so we are kind of "not thinking about it" let alone changing it.

Anyway, I digress. The fact is that even with the ANC and all the purported corruption, there was less democracy (i.e. there wasn't any) before them and no prospect of democracy without them...and there was more corruptio by the Nats than the ANC can ever dream of doing. Selective memories are as short as you want it to be.

What I mean is that people have asked for a referendum on the death penalty and the government say NO WAY. They often have "bills" where they ask for public submissions which last as long as the people in charge would like and it normally ends up going the route the government want anyway.

When it comes to selective memories etc, I think having allegations in black and white are better than saying this or that happened under the Nat government.
