“We said we’d be making no further comment on the matter.”
The words from SARU in December 2013, when SportsFire was seeking more information on the serious allegations against their CEO, Jurie Roux.
But that didn’t stop Roux from having endearing “off the record” discussions with selected Cape Town journalists to give his side of the story.
It’s called hiding behind the PR curtain.
13 August 2014 – SARU unanimously approved the extension of the contract of Jurie Roux as the chief executive officer for another five years.
For a man that should be on gardening leave, it is an unbelievable achievement.
How does a CEO who’s being investigated by the Hawks for alleged fraud after a Stellenbosch University forensic investigation get a contract extension?
“Jurie Roux has been an outstanding CEO of SARU and we are very happy to have extended his contract with the organisation.” – Oregan Hoskins, SARU president
The same Hoskins, who breached confidentiality by giving Roux a copy of the forensic report which fingers him for fraud.
Roux has made SARU into his own little playground while Hoskins has been doing his MBA for the last two years.
Could explain why Hoskins is so loyal to his CEO.
It’s very comfortable at the top of the SARU chain with big salaries, bonuses, jobs for friends and unexplained payments.
Was “Boland Rugby” ever paid an amount by SARU for monies “owed” to Mr Francois Davids?
SARU: Ask Boland
If yes, what was the amount and what was it for?
SARU: Ask Boland
It’s alleged that SARU paid over R2 million but nobody seems to know its final destination.
Does Mr Abe Davids (coach of Boland) have a level 3 IRB coaching qualification?
SARU: He completed the course but his coaching diary is waiting to be assessed before he will receive his L3 IRB certificate.
Just another cover up by SARU as Davids was appointed as Boland coach last year with the grandeur that he is the only coach in the area with an IRB level 3 qualification.
Francois Davids was the Boland Rugby Union President at the time of his brother’s appointment but he’s now on the SARU executive and very close to Roux.
The recent allegations of match fixing in Boland club rugby are believed to be an attempt to get rid of the new Boland rugby president, Ivan Pekeur who insiders say is trying to “clean up” Boland rugby.
Yes, why would the Davids clan want that when they’ve had a free ride?
Sad for a union like Boland that has been a nursery for so many of SA rugby greats.
SARU will “investigate” the Boland match fixing allegations
Will they investigate it as little as they did with the allegations against Roux?
Roux’s legal adviser just happens to be a SARU legal adviser as well, which is surely a conflict of grave interest?
I hear it often – how does SA rugby get away with not having quotas in the Bok team?
No clear cut answer but SARU deputy president, Mark Alexander sits on the SASCOC board and Roux is a staunch SASCOC supporter.
In fact, SASCOC CEO, Tubby Reddy was a “special guest” at a SARU AGM earlier this year.
Alexander is not short of other business interests and apart from his rugby titles, he is currently an active director of no fewer than five companies.
Moreover, he’s been a director of seven other companies that have gone into voluntary liquidation since 2000.
There are also a number of allegations that Alexander is “benefitting” from a SARU client and is very close to members of the Lotto distribution agency.
When asked if he would be able to declare flights & accommodation details for 2013 & 2014 in the form of a printout?
SARU: “Frankly, this is an unreasonable request.”
Unreasonable and nonsensical is the agreement between SARU and Highbury Safika Media (HSM) with regards the SA Rugby magazine.
SARU claims it’s not their official publication and HSM don’t pay for using the SA Rugby trademarks.
What a deal!
“I am comfortable with the fact that HSM has the right to publish SA Rugby Magazine. It is up to SARU to challenge these rights if they feel we are infringing any of their rights.” – HSM CEO, Kevin Ferguson
You could have a field day behind the SARU iron curtain.
The truth will prevail if Stellenbosch University lays criminal and civil charges against Roux, which could still happen.
“Stellenbosch University is of the view that it would not be appropriate to comment at this stage as the matter is subject to an ongoing investigation.”
The Hawks have had the case since last December and in July, Capt Paul Ramaloko responded to SportsFire:
“It is not the Hawks policy to provide details on the development of the case. The matter is still under investigation. At an appropriate time, when an arrest is made, we will make noise about it.”
It’s all whispers for now but what example is SARU setting for all the players in this country, what the game is about?
Egos and self gain have taken over from the ethos of an ancient war game, where the warriors respect one another and team members value honesty and respect.
