Arument for a 10mb line vs 4mb

I have gone for OpenWebs 4mb special - although I am tempted to go for the 10mb account.

What benefits have the 10mb users found besides "downloading faster". Or would that be the only reason to go faster than 4mb.

Theoretically on my 4mb I should stream 720p with no wait and 1080p with some slight lag - busy moving line so can't test just yet

Well, besides streaming 720p+ and faster download speeds, there really isn't much else that you'll benefit from, imho.
 
If you get your DSL Line syncing at 10d 1up your pings will drop.

Note: As a SAfrican, I'm conditioned to waiting for everything. Torrents and usenet get me what I need - more than I have time to consume actually, even at 1080p. They do run 24/7 tho.

More than 2 people in the house relying on that and I'd need to stretch it accordingly...

Yep, same situation.
8 Gigs a day gives you roughly two 720p blurays every day.... what more do you need, really?

Im married to an asian. 10mb is simply not enough :(
 
This is misleading. a 384 kb line will ping at the same latency as a 10mb unless there is load on it.

When I upgraded from a 0.5U to 1.0U the difference was noticeable, especially because I use teamspeak and Skype while gaming

Actually it is not misleading.

When my line went from 384k to 4096k latency dropped by 5ms to the first hop, on an idle line. Speed most definitely does make a difference to latency, although 5ms to most is insignificant. Now that my line is 10Mbps, latency sometimes are 4ms to the first hop.

My movement from 4Mbs to 10Mbs dropped my pings (idle) by around 7-10. When under load (Skype, BF3 and other using the line) I see an even larger performance gap.

Rather upgrade to Unshaped 4Meg if you ask me. If your adsl line is set to 6meg it'll probably burst to that anyway most of the time.

If you could explain the science behind that I would love to hear.

A ping is a tiny packet of data. Its not going to change if you a 10GB connection or a 65k connection unless there is load on the line. Perhaps in your case, you either had load you had not identified or you got put onto a different exchange that routed you in a different way. Or perhaps you were moved from copper routing onto fiber routing. I dont know. It makes no sense that your ping would drop unless you had load on your line.

Normally you are still connecting to the same exchange, using the same upstream pipe. How does a 10mb line make a single tiny packet of data go faster? Its the same copper technology! Remember. 10mb vs 4mb is like a road. The wider your road the more cars you can fit through. However, since we are only working with 1 car when it comes to a ping and the road is completely open. It doesnt make a difference if its 1 lane or 20. That 1 car is not going get a performance increase now because the road went from 1 lane to 20 lanes.

If there are other cars on the road and there is not enough room, then yeah. You would get a performance increase... but in this case.. it makes no sense.

Ive gone from 4mb to 10mb without a single difference in latency. As what is expected.
 
Back in the day I was on Counter Strike Source SGS servers first with my 384kbps line than people with faster lines. These people were just physically further away so they had a slightly higher latency.

Anyway, try the 4Mb first, and if not happy with it, go up.

I'm happy with my 1Mb., but I sometimes do put my 8ta 10GB 3G stick out for more performance.

Sadly it is not as simple as you make it out to be, and because I can not find the article I used in the past as reference, I will stop the troll here and say, the evidence I have seen has shown me that higher speed links give lower latency. What I can tell you is, the time on ADSL changes when you go to faster speeds, there are more lanes for the packets to be split up in to. For example:a 64byte ICMP ping from windows won't fit into a 53byte ATM cell, and ATM is still used for backhaul in many places. So what happen is, when you go from a 384k line which has a 128k upload speed, to a 10mb line with a 1024k upload speed, there are more lanes for packets to be split up into, which mean they can be pushed out at the same time as opposed to waiting in a queue to be pushed through limited lanes.

Either way, its so insignificant, that if you don't want to believe me, it is not the end of the world, I'll rather just leave you spreading what you believe in.
