Hello
I used to be fearless in my teens.
Now I'm older (mid-twenties) I'm scared.
Crippling fear to do things I found easy when younger.
Afraid arm might break, I'll slip off ladder. Everything.
Anyone notice this? Am I alone? Have I just lost faith in myself?

:(

I think as many people grow older they become more conservative or fearful. Thats why you see conservative politicians play on fears. Fear of immigrants, racial fears, religious fears, etc.

You are not afraid dude, you are now aware that doing something that seemed fearless back in your younger days now actual has a real probability of turning out poorly. Basically you have grown up but if you cannot bring yourself to climb a ladder then i think you need help hahah

Being careful is sign of growing up, being afraid though isn't good. Caution yes but scared i dunno. I live life pretty simply. We are going to die, matter of how and when. No that does mean i will go jump off 5 story building thinking life will decide.

You gotta have faith in yourself to recognize when or how doing something can kill you or hurt you. Oddly enough you can be talking, trip and break your arm. I mean shyte happens bro, nothing you can do to avoid life at times.

wait till you're in your 40's.

Its pretty standard..

As you get older, you get more aware of your limitations, and try not to push them too far.

I do lots of work on the house, and sometimes I scare the living crap out of myself.. Things like Angle Grinders (especially the 230mm one) are fear making equipment on a whole new level.

Don't worry, the next phase is where you don't give a sh###t. It's a wonderful feeling. :)

You seem to be getting physically old, ok that isnt the best observation but what you mentioned is all about physical activities?
Are you much less active then you were in you teens?

Yep, you tend to become more responsible for yourself at your age. Also, more aware of your own mortality.

Im prob around the same age as OP but, i still do things that are unsafe such as

Using a weedwhacker while wearing short pants,
Not using a cap when mowing the lawn:D;)

You probably realising that some things have consequences, and that also, you body takes longer to recover for physical injuries. Old age mate.

I was hit in the groin with an angle grinder once.
The only thing that saved my genitals was the grinder getting wrapped up in underpants.
Still nicked my scrot though :(

Now that was scary.
Not that it stopped me from angle grinding.

Moral of the story....... don't let an angle grinder to the groin turn you into an old man.

Badass! :p

Its simple. When you were a kid you were only responsible for yourself.
Doing stupid stuff was ok, only you'd be affected.
Now you are a adult, probably married, kids, etc. You are now there for someone else too. That is my driving force for not doing anything stupid.
I'm not afraid, fear is stupid - I'm sensible. Tie some inner tubes together with buddies, jump on and drift down from Vanderbijlpark to the Barrage with a bottle of Tequila and beer? (That was a awesome day) Erm. no. The kids will want to join.

Climb on the roof to fix something? The easy route is not so easy anymore - I planted Jasmine there to actually make it more difficult for curious little persons. Time to use the ladder - its what I bought it for anyway.

As for the rest - I'm currently doing a lot of stuff for the safety and health inspectors at a bunch of factories. I get to see the accident reports. I now have a decent set of safety glasses and gloves, and I use them when using power tools.

A healthy dose of fear is needed around machinery, if you do not fear it a little bit then you will get hurt. Fear makes you think twice.
Please wear eye protection at all times when working with machinery, even a small drill can have nasty consequences when a splinter get into your eye. Yes it is a pita to wear the stuff but replacing an eye is not possible.

+1, I wish the public could read those reports. Will frighten a lot of careless guys into buying safety gear.
