Hi,

I have a question regarding the process of actually aquiring an AS number and routing through multiple ISP's.

Now, we've all done the CCNA etc but these question are around the processes as to "how" this all works.

Lets say I work for an orginization, that orginization wants to setup multihomed BGP connection through multiple ISP's. Your job is to "set this all up"

I'm not interested in the BGP config, what my question relates to is

A) You need an AS number, where do you get one? ( do you even need a public AS number or is this where Private AS numbers come into place)
B) You need public address space, where do you get it (lease it from another provides, who? if you lease it, can you redistribute it via another ISP)
C) Lets say you have your AS number and public address space, how do you actually setup BGP relationships with a provider (is this peering?), would you lease a fibre connection to a DC (Teraco) and from there setup BGP with a few ISP's?
D) Where do you get the international capacity from, (I assume from whomever you are routing with)
E) Who are these ISPs? are we talking Web Africa/Afrihost/Cybersmart or Vodacom/MTN/IS

It seems the whole Cisco R&S track is aimed towards this kind of this, however there is not much information as to how to do it in real life.

If the questions are stupid, i applogies, I'm still learning but this bugs the hell out of me.

A) You will need a public asn for multihoming. You can apply for one and an iP address block through afrinic. With a private asn you are basically "natting" behind one isp's asn.

B) afrinic. If you lease the ip's you cannot multihome.

C) you would need to have some sort of transit to the providers core or pop. You would then need to setup bgp with the provider or multiple providers.

D) from your provider. Unless you are an isp there is no point in buying dedicated bandwidth.

E) all of those and more. There are tons of registered telco's that can sell bandwidth

Did it a while ago. Here is it in a nutshell.

1. In africa, Afrinic - www.afrinic.net

2. Same as #1

3. You have to talk to each provider. Different providers have different conditions. But going to Teraco is a good way, a lot of providers in one building.

4. See #3

5. If they have an AS nr, you can peer with them. Here is a list of some of the people in JB1. https://www.peeringdb.com/private/exchange_view.php?id=592

Read everything you can on the afrinic page. Also, go to the afrinic training before you start. They will answer most of your questions there. It is good place to meet the peering guys of different companies.
