Which would be the sound(er) action given I've got about R50k to invest?

My (noob) thoughts..

A mining rig has a roi period of 5-10 months, thereafter it's free money, but my elec bill's already R3k/m. I really detest giving Guptacom more of my money, even if I'll make it back.

Investment potentially earns you coin from day one, to minimise risk spend say 50-60% on established coins (BTC/ETH) and the rest on more volatile/startups with the chance of buying cheap before they make it big.

Am fully aware of the risks, but crypto seems to have a good run lately. Thoughts?

I'm wondering if an ASIC miner may be a better option currently than GPU. Don't know what you can get for R50k.

Something has to happen after 1/11 when Ethereum switches to proof of stake and can't be mined anymore, but I don't know what that will be. Alternatives like zcash has not really picked up again as far as GPU mining goes.

Currently it does seem like a good idea to invest in OMG,CVC,NEO,TenX,ETH and Iconomi, perhaps Iota as well. Then of course BTC itself and keep an eye on Bitcoin Cash.

Ultimately you will have to decide yourself of course. Perhaps those who have been longer in the game can give better advice.

If I was just introduced to cryptocurrency now I would put it in Bitcoin while I figure out what's happening with other cryptos and then play from there. It might seem silly to some considering how it has skyrocketed lately, even as we speak. But I don't think it's coming down for a while. I would/have put money it now.

Mining is a lot more tricky as you need to actually get hold of a rig at a decent price, something thats not easy with the high demand. If you get the wrong rig or the next generation comes out and you are invested in the previous generation you are toast.
