Any potential problems doing this (before I start bumbling my way through building the site)?

Looking at hosting with circle.co.za, due to a certain poster's recommendations and despite their ignoring my sales ticket.

Had the same issue with the sales ticket... Wonder what's up with that? Funny thing though - they replied to it almost 2 months later... I'm sure their after sales support is better... Don't think you'll have trouble with MVC2 - why would you?

I'm heading into the unknown, normally write in PHP.

Well, welcome to the world of .NET then... :) I'm sure you'll enjoy it. It really is powerful and flexible. MVC is a good entry point for a PHP developer, more so than Web Forms.

Thanks.

I started out in programming, maaaaaaaaaany years ago, writing Classic ASP, VB6 COM (DLL hell and all that) and have somehow manage to regress to the point where I mostly write HTML/CSS/jQuery and the occasional bit of PHP. But the place I'm at now I have carte blanche to decide on what future projects get written in, .NET looks the way. All the overlords care about is the hosting costs.

Circle's hosting cost really isn't that bad... Only consideration is that it's international. I've still yet to host a site at them though, but Raithlin sings their praise... :)

How sure are you that ASP.NET MVC 2 is supported on those hosting packages? I don't know of any South African website hosting companies that have products that natively support MVC. Last time I enquired about using MVC @ Web Africa, they said I would need dedicated hosting (that was about a year ago). Usually when they just specify ASP.NET 3.5 hosting it implies that you can use .NET 3.5 features on ASP.NET 2.0 (Vanilla ASP.NET - not MVC).

If you're going international, you might as well go with Discount ASP.NET, they've won quite a few rewards for their .NET hosting and are always up to date with the latest software (ex. ASP.NET 4.0 from just checking), they even had MVC 1 sandbox while it was still in development (downloadable apart from the .NET framework).

Good luck!

Not sure at all. Circle's client service is terrible. A lot of the local Windows hosting companies just say "asp.net" - not much help. May have to look at an overseas-based company.

The question, gentlemen, is not whether .Net 3.5 is supported by Circle - it is (and they make it clear on their sales pages). The question at hand is if MVC2 is supported by 3.5 - which it is.
ASP.NET MVC 2 is designed to work with both VS 2008 / .NET 3.5, as well as with VS 2010 / .NET 4

If you have any other questions, let me know. Generally the after-sales support is better than their sales support.

Alternatively, I could set it up on my own site and let you know. I wonder if there's a six-pack in it for me... :p

You know you want to! There may even be a few emoticons in it for you...

I'll try find something simpler...

Edit: Sorry, that code I linked won't run on 3.5, uses stuff like <%: - 4 framework stuff.

I've found a small demo - busy downloading MVC2 source code now (EDIT: Oh, wait - it uses WPI to install). I'll hopefully get to take a look at it tonight.

Bugger. My host server only has v2.0.

I'm considering buying a reseller account. This will be the acid test. Stay tuned.

[EDIT]
Ok, so that was quick. It's been enabled for me, and I'm able to check it. That said, I now need to figure out what I'm doing wrong (permissions, etc.) because the code works on my dev machine, but not on the site as yet. I'm pretty sure I haven't configured it properly, so I'll get back to you.

Um, guys, any tips on getting the live host up and running? What exactly do I need to configure for http://svendigital.co.za/demo/ to get anything other than a Directory Listing Denied error?

This being my first MVC2 attempt, I'm more than a little lost. :erm:
