Can anyone tell me why asterisk always adentifies itself as "asterisk"?

eg: From: "asterisk" <sip:[email protected]>;tag=as32ce1ba8;rport

I have tried using realm, callerid, fromuser and fromdomain in sip.conf, tried systemname in asterisk.conf, tried changing the machines hostname and other things I cant even recall now. Also havent found anything useful on the net.. This might be a noob question, but I cant find anyone who has an answer?

Thanks..

That would usually only happen if you're dialling a test call from the console using a command like "console dial 123@default" as there is no caller id. It may also happen in instances where no caller id exists (which is seldom the case since hidden caller id usually results in 'anonymous' but may occurr if there is no caller id information associated with the channel).

Otherwise, it will use the caller ID as the from part (unless you specify fromuser in which case it uses that). callerid in sip.conf is used to re-write incoming caller id...e.g. where you don't trust the caller id set on the voip phone.
