After skipping two generations the Astra sedan is returning to South Africa in October this year.

Although its upmarket positioning will prevent it from attaining the success of its predecessors, the new four-door will provide a fresh and somewhat elegant alternative to segment stalwarts like the VW Jetta, Toyota Corolla and GM's own Chevrolet Cruze.

The Astra sedan has the same 2685mm wheelbase as the five-door Astra hatchback, but with an overall length of 4658mm it is 239mm longer. This stretch translates into a relatively generous 460-litre boot capacity - 90 litres more than the hatch offers.

The sedan will mirror the five-door hatch in offering three petrol engine choices within a four-model range.

The normally aspirated 85kW/155Nm 1.6-litre Essentia kicks off the line-up and the 103kW/200Nm 1.4 turbo engine fills the middle of the range in both Essentia manual and Essentia automatic guises.

Top of the pile is the 1.6 Turbo Cosmo, boating outputs of 132kW and 266Nm.

Prices will be announced when the sedan is launched locally and it's likely to command a small premium over the five-door, which costs between R234 500 and R303 000.

Refreshing to see that some German car makers still believe in hiting good designers and roll out the same old boring shaped all the time. The Astra sedan is like a smaller more striking version on the Insignia. While sedans are not as practical as hatchbacks I seriously would not mind one like this. The design is so much more detailed than the boring euroboxes rolling off the VAG production line. This will be a car that VAG lovers will love to hate :p
 
I tend to prefer more sharp-edged designs, which is part of why I really, really like the new Golf, but this is a pretty car. And not just for a sedan.

Still wouldn't want one though. :p
 
I quite agree with HapticSimian, while it is a sexy car GMSA still has a lot of work to do in terms of brand perception. Their should it stay or should it go strategy with regards to Opel in SA did do some damage to the brand.

About the practicality, well it depends on what you want to do with the car. Back when I bought my old Astra G I had a choice between hatch or sedan, I took the hatch and in the long run it has proven to be very practical if you want to load things like furniture and mountain bikes in the back. The lower height of the boot on the Astra G sedans would have limited the kind of junk I put in the trunk :)
 
I like this so so very much more than anything else in it's class. Beautiful.

Different strokes though, I've always liked the golf too, and those interiors are just in a different league altogether. Fortunately the Astra's interior is now also more practical, the previous model is, in all honesty, mediocre. Not in terms of looks, but practicality, basically no stowage space. VW's always been quite far ahead there.

There is no Audi that competes with the Astra Sedan. The A4 is in the same segment as the Insignia, which we do not have in SA.
 
Not a fan, would rather wait for the upcoming A3 Sedan:

The Astra isn't in that class :confused: And the pic of the Audi you posted obviously has some kind of kit fitted to it, a vanilla A4 doesn't look like that at all.
