ASUS DSL-N14U router affecting SNR

I have a 10Mbps line (uncapped), its was syncing at 7Mpbs and with this router (Asus DSL-N14U) the SNR was 11-12dB. However when Telkom technicians were here testing with their router (and telephone line and all lan cables connected - so like for like) we saw the SNR was 15-16dB.

At the moment, the line is syncing at 8Mbps and the SNR (on the ASUS) is 6dB. The SNR improves as you reduce the sync speed on the line. The higher the sync speed, the worse the SNR.

The question is, why would this router (1 year old) be effecting my SNR? Are there other settings I can play with on this router?

Below is a screenshot of the current SNR & Line attenuation:

Will any of these setting have any effect?

thanks in advance

I'm unsure about your issue specifically but I have the same router and was just wondering if your firmware is updated to the latest version?

My DSL modulation is set to auto sync up. Only setting different between mine and yours. My SNR is 24.8.

I have a similar problem. My snr drops from 12 to 4 at night. TelkomZa has been trying to help.

The biggest problem is the technicians that come and check. They don't seem to know what to do.

My SNR doesn't change during the day. Telkom came ans tested with their modem at my phone line and EVERY point/connection from there to the pole in the street until the found where the SNR was dropping. they then replaced that line. however my router just doesn't get the same SNR they get on thier router

Routers are like speedos in cars, some over read, some under read.

I've got a couple of routers in the cupboard (D-Link, Pace, NetGear, TP-Link) and they all give different SNR values when used on my line.

ok, but by a difference of say 6dB? which in my opinion takes me from a "bad" SNR to a "good" one http://www.dslreports.com/faq/16220?
What's your downstream attenuation? If it's over 40dB all bets are off due to your cable distance from the exchange and you'll probably find your SNR "drifting" by as much 6dB - doesn't mean your line is bad as ADSL is a best effort service.

I'm at a marginal distance (I'm told it's 3.2kms) and I have problems every 2 years or thereabouts, it's currently stable after Openserve replaced some old sections of cable recently.

Edit: Just seen your stats in 1st post, your upstream attenuation is weird at 0.0dB. Something wrong somewhere.

My attenuation is 22.0 dB. You are right about the upstream. not sure what that means or why it would be 0 (its still like that)

Max rate of 9216 is also not good for 22.0dB down attenuation and that's with ASSIA working overtime with 64 interleave, I'd be pushing Openserve for an explanation and a solution.

Did the tech say your router was faulty and show you figures similar to mine on his?

So Im with WebAfrica. my understanding is that the Max Rate is what your line can handle? so im on a 10Mbps line so max rate woudl/should be around 10000?

When the telkom tech came with his router and we compared mine vs his, I only looked at the SNR to be honest. and that when i saw the huge difference.

Seeing that im close to the exchange and on a 10mbps line (capped) what do you think I should ask telkom to adjust my sync speed and max rate too?

The ASSIA system is controlling your sync speed based on a number of factors including max rate attainable which is lousy given your proximity to the exchange. I also pay for a 10MB line and get hot & bothered when I don't get it. A PM to TelkomZA normally gets things sorted if techs are giving you the run around - include your ADSL line number 0xx-xxx-xxxx and any fault refs you have together with your stats.

If the tech said your router was faulty test with a loaner from a friend first to see if that resolves the problem.

Hi.

How did they test the SNR at their boxes?

Here are my stats currently

So apparently they run a test independent from my account, it is a normal sync test of ones line. I thought they were connected to my WebAfrica account on their router. but apparently not!
your SNR is lower than mine and if those were my stats, i woudl be worried but maybe i misunderstand this whole SNR thing

Thanks. I will give that a try
