This is an adequate performer, but will not leave other contestants ‘eating dust at the starting line‘. It looks very nice though...
I was quite excited to get this bad boy out of its packaging, and when I slid it out, was rewarded by a vision in Lamborghini yellow. The lid even looks suggestive of the finish of every supercar enthusiast’s wet dream. I was also pleased to see that it is quite compact, yet boasts amazing specifications.
In terms of aesthetics, this model is divine: it has been built with extensive use of the same materials used in the construction of Lamborghini cars, and I was blown away by the inclusion of a genuine leather mouse pad, complete with a metal Lamborghini badge. Leather is also present where the wrists rest during use, and the keys have an intriguing, somewhat granular, metal-speckled finish.
The ‘scratch pad’ is larger than usual, and unusually comfortable to use (as these things go!). Unfortunately, the screen has a high-gloss finish, prone to fingerprints and, more importantly, reflected glare. Then again, some people like this sort of finish.
The layout of ports and connectors is better than the average laptop’s. There are three USB ports on the left, and one on the right toward the rear. Along with the left-hand side placement of the exhaust vent, this model is designed with right-handed users in mind. There is also a VGA output and an HDMI output, so this system is definitely aimed at visual-output applications, such as presentations, or simply for enjoying video.
The audio jacks are at the rear right, rather than the usual front edge, and we like this arrangement much more than the standard layout.
Two batteries are included: a standard one and an extended one, which is larger. The latter lasts longer, but doesn’t allow the notebook to fit into its velvet pouch. The VX3 also ships with a variety of cables for its AC adapter, allowing it to be used in any country. A Bluetooth mouse is included, also styled in Lamborghini fashion.
All of the preceding is so positive that it was quite disappointing when it came down to actual performance. And this is quite surprising, given that the specifications are very good. The VX3 handles well enough when watching movies and doing work, but forget about playing any game that’s less than a year or two old at any decent sort of graphics settings. In light of this fact, this model falls firmly into the ‘executive status symbol’ category.
