In the sub-$100 micro computing and micro electronics genre, they are indeed a competitor. Price is NOT the only grounds for competition. And for micro-electronics enthusiasts such as myself it IS a competitor. Arduino, RPi and this all compete for where we spend our money vs what we get for it.

So a R999 smartphone is a competitor for the iPhone because it's also a smartphone. Noted.

Of course it is. There are different segments for competition, it's not all in the 'has a high end camera' segment, or 'does LTE-Advanced' etc. If people are buying the R999 phone, it's because they have a choice and chose it over a R16k iphone.

So something that's twice the price being called a competitor is correct? LMAO. Different price segments. Of cause it will win if you don't factor in the price.

Lots of people would want a pi with double the processing power and 4k capable, me included. Doubling the price of a pi certainly is no dealbreaker. The thing is, the pi3 will not receive an update for a couple of years, so it makes this a great alternative.

Hopefully my kernel modules slot in without too much tweaking.

There is no upgrade route after the bcm2837, which was in many aspects a drop-in replacement for the 2836 of the rpi2. Any new pi's will require a lot more development than previous revisions to get to market.

I don't think that's going to happen. Not this year. It is quite significantly different from previous models.
