Hi all

So there's quite a bit of opinion on Asus mobos not liking 4 x RAM sticks. Seems like it's quite a problem. Asus P5Q won't boot with 4 x 1GB Corsair 1066 Dominators, even though all sticks are 100% working.

Going to try a BIOS update.

What's the verdict? Any workarounds? Links?

Thanks!

My guess is that the motherboard doesn't like that many high-density modules. I've seen a few instances where the motherboards like only 2x high-density modules, but not 4 of them.

There's nothing really that you can do about it, except getting different modules.

It could perhaps be that the motherboard doesn't detect the memory timings correctly, but I doubt that this would be the issue.

If you can, perhaps try bumping the voltage to the MCH, by like 0.01V.

The density is regarding the size of the individual chips on each ram stick, not the overall size, iirc.

I use a Socket 775 P5Q Deluxe with 4 X 2 Gb Kingstons but, @ 800MHz. Remember that to use 1066 memory you need to use the provided Overclocking software as well as tweaking your BIOS. Go to the P5Q forums on Asus website, you should be able to get answers to your problems. Please let us know you do get it going. BTW where did you get the RAM?

Frontosa a while ago.

Yeah it's probably sitting at either 533, 667 or 800 at stock, no where near 1066. Intel E6700. Mate's PC.

Tried BIOS update and bumping up RAM, to no effect.

Vendors report it's fine for 2 x 2GB, not 4 x 1GB... :(

Asus problem or other brands too?

Have you looked at the QVL for the mobo?

There have been a few of the highend MB's that when using more than 2GB of RAM will only work properly if you use RAM on their QVL. In some instances there have been BIOS updates to solve this, but not for all the boards that have/had that problem.

So the best options could be:
do bios update
if still a problem - buy RAM listed on the QVL only...

(I also thought :wtf: 'til I saw it for myself)

Just saying that they do work. Have you tried manually setting the timings or frequency? I know my old Corsairs were 2.3V, not the usual 1.8V. Try force voltage manually.

Yeah tried BIOS update and bumping up RAM voltage by 0.01v as per Rudimental's suggestion. Vendors claim 4 x 1GB is dodgy on the P5Q.

PP, I was talking about the MCH (Memory Controller Hub, to be exact, usually in the North Bridge) whereas he is talking about the actual RAM voltage, for which you can make greater voltage changes, depending on what the RAM is rated at.

Sorry if I caused a bit of confusion there.
