Hi guys,

A mate of mine is looking to get a laptop for his postgrad, and come hell or high water, he wants it to be on the top-end bench. Now it's going to be for rendering purposes mainly, as he's not a gamer, and as such, the M11x or in the Dell XPS range are a touch overkill, especially price wise.

Bugdet is 10k, pushable to a max of 12k. I've found the Asus N53JQ, which fits the bill, as we need high memory capability, as well as plenty of HDD space for handling constant renders with Revit. This is the reason he wants i7 over i5 tech.

Now I found it for R11900 with Sybaritic, whom I've dealt with many times, though also for R500 less at Nivo.

Are there any suggestions as to where we can get it for the cheapest possible price, or alternately, find another notebook with 16GB memory support. (This one has 4 slots).

Hi comanche

Asus N53JQ-SZ120X Intel Core i7-740QM 1.73Ghz 15.6'' 4GB 500GB HDD nVidia Geforce 425M - R11478.66 including VAT. But, no stock at the moment and no good ETA either May even be discontinued and replaced with Asus N53SV which is Sandy Bridge, ETA is set for 01/02/2011 @ R11841.11 inclusive of VAT.

If you need one asap I suggest this as an alternative: Lenovo 59-051263 thinkpad Y560 Intel Core i7-740QM 1.73GHz 15.6" 4GB 500GB HDD - R10028.58 including VAT and only one unit left in stock (JHB). Note this is 5730 ATI vs the 425M Nvidia of the Asus).

I've had issues trying to get source f the N53JQ, so it may well be discontinued. That said, the N53SV is exactly what I was looking for, though thought that the newer CPU specs would bump up pricing.
Is the ETA on the latter quite firm? University only open their doors mid-Feb, so timing isn't an overly compelling factor. Also, would it come with the standard 2 year warranty, or would it be able to be bumped up to 3?

Asus N53JQ-SZ120X is EOL, just confirmed now.
Asus N53SV-SZ190X will be in stock (as per supplier) on 01/02/2011 and price is still @ R11841.11 inclusive.
I'll add to the site a little later today.
2 Years international warranty with local pick up and return on the N53SV-SZ190X.

Another option at PC Zone (bottom right), it's a monster, screen and price :wtf: Nice specs though. 1st week Feb due in.

Acer Aspire AS8950G-7268G1TBMN R17k

And it's only 5 grand over max budget :/

For that price, I'd personally prefer the MSI GT660 - http://www.laptopdirect.co.za/laptop_specifications.php?laptop=36984
Mind you, I'd have to sell my kidney, liver and a couple other appendages to be able to afford it.

Sure, I know, I was just making the point that new laptops with Sandy Bridge will start coming through from beginning Feb and onward.

Landmarks offer is what I would go for in your position. I am hanging off until mid year or thereabouts, when lots more options should be available.

True.
Thankfully my studies require me getting a big workhorse only next year, so I'll do doing some saving this year to hopefully afford something that can last a long while afterwards.

Sorry to bump this - but does anybody know if you can buy an Extended Warranty for ASUS Notebooks in SA? Looking at getting the Sandy Bridge one, but wants to get a 3 year warranty and they only come with 2...
