Asus Rog Ally

Yes, you bought a Pro key. For people who haven't purchased a key, if their SSD loses data and the Asus servers go offline you will then have to buy a new key to get Windows 11 Home OEM or may as well buy a Pro key. What are you doing with your original SSD? I'm keeping mine as a backup.

Yeah one of these OEM keys that are like R45.

OK, they're cheap. I also bought a BOBShop Pro key to get access to policy editor and stop Windows from installing incorrect graphics drivers automatically.

windows activation is tied to hardware. In the event recovery is no longer available, you can just use a regular windows iso and it will install home edition, activation will happen when you connect to the internet. Thats how MS works these days

Your activation key is now also kept with your Microsoft account login. As soon as you login to your MS account then your pc will be activated otherwise its stored in the hardware of the bios

Best bet is to check on Reddit. I paid $219 for my 2TB SSD and for that I could have purchased this adapter and a 4TB SSD. Back then though, this thing wasn't around. I'm ok with 2TB though. But games being this big, for example Forza 5, I have 4 installed but 5 also in the library, it can always benefit with more space.
I think i will stick to a 2tb for now. Do you know the best place locally where i can purchase the 2tb 2230 drive?

No. 6 months ago I was looking for a 2 TB 2230 and couldn't find anything locally.

As long as you link it though, that way. Some people advise against that.

The site also offers a discount code if you sign up.

Proper local??

I purchased something small from them back in 2020 and it was out of stock so they called or emailed, asking if they could substitute I refused.

FWIW
  • Unit A21, Kimbult Industrial Park, 9 Zeiss Road, Laser Park, Honeydew, Johannesburg, 2040
  • Call us at 010 020 1980

Micron is a good company though. If that is a genuine 2TB SSD it's probably at least as good as the WD or Sabrent.

Okay 50% positive reviews not bad, also actually not to far

I bought mine 3 days before Christmas from the Asus sa store. Collected next day from there warehouse. It was on special for R12999. On checkout i got another discount of R1000 so purchased mine for R11999. I was very happy after this :) Its not back to there original price.

That's a good price.

Is snatcher.co.za legit? I have not heard of them yet until now.

They used to be at this address in 2021.

Snatcher Online

Unit2 Printech Park, 3 Battleship Road, Laserpark, Johannesburg, 1725, South Africa

Hellopeter has mostly fair to good reviews. They're probably legit. They've been around since at least 2021.

Saying this I'd probably buy something cheap to assess them first.

Basically from windows 10 the digital license keys themselves get tied to the hardware when first activated (in our case, Asus used OEM win 11 home licensing model) Assuming you ran through the Out of box experience connected to the internet, this was when MS registered the hardware ID to the key(from a pool of keys Asus has purchased)and activated windows. From this point on, regardless of what happens, the device can be activated through MS official channels.
Interestingly enough, this process I mentioned supercedes retail keys in some cases as MS will recognize the Hardware ID and activate win11 home. In the event you bought a key for the Ally, if you reinstall windows with the iso or bootable usb and it asks you for the license key - click I don't have one. It will run through the entire setup and activate the original windows home key linked to the device from the Asus pool. You can then take the pro key you purchased and upgrade it again to win 11 pro
