Southern Beirut is a stronghold of Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group and has been targeted in the past by Sunni extremists.

Islamic State (IS) says it was behind the suicide bomb attacks that killed at least 37 people and wounded dozens of others in a southern suburb of Beirut.

The attacks happened minutes apart at a Shia community centre and nearby bakery in the Borj al Barajneh area during the evening rush hour.

In a statement posted on Twitter, IS said its members blew up a bike loaded with explosives and when people gathered a suicide bomber blew himself up among them, killing 40.

he Lebanese Red Cross has put the death toll at 37 and says a further 181 people people were injured in the blasts.

According to a Lebanese security official, the first attacker detonated his explosives' vest outside the community centre and the second blew himself up inside the bakery.

Beirut suicide bombings kill 41; suspect claims ISIS sent attackers

A pair of suicide bombings struck southern Beirut on Thursday, killing more than 40 people and wounding at least 200 others.

A would-be suicide bomber who survived the attack told investigators he was an ISIS recruit, a Lebanese security source said. The man, a Lebanese national from Tripoli, Lebanon, was taken into custody after the blasts. He told authorities that he and three other attackers arrived in Lebanon from Syria two days ago, the source said.

Lebanese intelligence believes the bombers could be part of a cell dispatched to Beirut by ISIS leadership, the source said, but investigators are still working to verify the surviving suspect's claim. The three other bombers were killed in the explosions.

In a purported ISIS statement circulated on social media, the terror group claimed responsibility for the blasts. CNN hasn't confirmed the authenticity of the statement.

The explosions detonated within 150 meters (490 feet) and five minutes of each other, Lebanon's state-run National News Agency said, shaking an open-air market and other parts of the Bourj al-Barajneh district in southern Beirut.

Lebanon holds day of mourning after deadly Beirut blasts

Lebanon is holding a day of national mourning after at least 41 people were killed in two suicide bombings in the capital, Beirut.

The Islamic State (IS) militant group says it was behind the attacks in Burj al-Barajneh, a mainly Shia southern suburb and Hezbollah stronghold.

Hezbollah forces are fighting IS in neighbouring Syria.

The bombing is the deadliest in the capital since the end of Lebanon's civil war in 1990.

Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam called for unity in the face of attempts to create strife.

In reaction from Washington, the White House in a statement condemned the "horrific terrorist" bomb blasts which it said "would only serve to reinforce our commitment to support the institutions of the Lebanese state, including the security services, to ensure a stable, sovereign and secure Lebanon".

Iran - a key ally of Hezbollah - has also condemned the attack.

Yes, because it is not in the Middle East, where people are killing each other all the time.

The same as you WITS students suffered from bad reporting actively seeking violence, when there wasn't really much violence at all, due to past (and current) student strikes which were indeed violent.
 
Lebanon arrests nine over deadly Beirut bombings

Lebanese security forces have arrested nine people, most of them Syrian nationals, over their alleged involvement in last week's twin bombings in Beirut that killed at least 44 people, the interior minister said.

"Until now the detained include seven Syrians and two Lebanese - one of them a [would-be] suicide bomber and the other a trafficker who smuggled them across the border from Syria," Interior Minister Nuhad Mashnuq said at a televised press conference on Sunday.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group claimed responsibility for the attacks last Thursday, which hit a busy shopping street in Burj al-Barajneh.

"The whole suicide bombing network and its supporters were arrested in the 48 hours following the explosion," Mashnuq said.

He said the Syrians were detained in a Palestinian refugee camp located in Burj al-Barajneh and a flat in the capital's eastern district of Ashrafieh that had been used to prepare the explosive belts.

The initial plan was apparently to send five suicide bombers to a hospital in the neighbourhood, he said, but heavy security forced them to change the target to a densely populated area.

Beirut-based political analyst Ali Rizk told Al Jazeera that the bombings signal a shift in ISIL's tactics.

In the past month, ISIL has claimed responsibility for downing a Russian plane and killing all 224 people on board, the Beirut bombings and the recent Paris attacks in which at least 129 people lost their lives.

"The group is transforming itself into a purely terror organisation in light of its losses on the ground in Iraq and Syria," Rizk said.

"The Beirut bombing is also an indication that the idea of Islamic caliphate, as envisioned by ISIL, is facing major reality checks, and is failing apart," he added, explaining that the attacks on foreign lands are because the group is failing to maintain power in its previous strongholds in Syria and Iraq.

Ali Meqdad, a member of the Lebanese parliament with close ties to Hezbollah, told Al Jazeera that "ISIL is waging an open war against Muslim and European societies in the Middle East and Europe".

"Those killed in the Beirut bombing, many of whom were children and the elderly, have paid an unnecessary price," Meqdad said.

"ISIL is engaged in terrorism only to defame the good name of Islam and it is serving only those who wish to keep Islam stigmatised by the terrorism label."

Or to view it with apathy and indifference at least. It has not done anyone any good and the Gods(if they exist) do not interfere in the issues of man and leave us to our own devices which is usually killing each other and abusing women.
