At what point is noise introduced?

Over night, my noise level increased drastically. Tuesday everything goes dead (no dial tone) and when they fix it on Wednesday the line is full of static.

I used to get a ratio of 6 at 20mpbs sync and now I'm at 6 at 10mbps (3.3 at 15mbps).

At what point could this be introduced?

From exchange to my house?
Or my house to that box outside?

Guessing then that once you have noise, that's it?

either of those places.

But I would imagine that it is most likely somewhere between the exchange and your house...

How old is the telkom infrastructure in your area?

I know they upgraded to 20mbps VDSL in October 2014 because they had all these promo people signing the complex up.

I recieved a real 17mbps down (synced 21mbps/6.4SNR) until last week Tuesday when it went off. After logging a fault, it came on with 3 times more noise!

The huge immediate problem I'm having is that it is trying to sync at the old 21mbps and can't because of the added noise - so no connection. I thought on the Telkom side the software automatically connects lower till it gets a connection?

Occasionally I get a sync at 10, 13 or 15 - but that doesn't last long before it tries 21 sync again.

Can be anywhere, often it is a faulty point in the exchange and moving you would fix it. Generally you are moved because someone else complained so they swapped your lines. Now you do the same and the circle goes round and round I'm afraid. Welcome to Telkom.
There is no fix and they will refuse to repair the line. Get them to come check your last bit of line to the pole anyway just in case.

What they should do then, is find someone that has 10mbps or lower that syncs and give them my line. Keep the decent copper for those with fast lines

I'm in a complex and I see a few Telkom boxes on the wall every few units. I guess like sub boxes before it goes to the street?

Thanks guys.

I've mailed Telkom ZA for assistance. My immediate issue is that is should stop trying to sync at anything more than 10mbps, because with the sh*tty line, it won't! Is there anyone else reading this that can help with forcing a lower sync, please ?

The second issue is the noise on the line / swapping the copper. But for now, I need to stop it attempting a high sync :/

Btw - what are those things for that they connect to the lien inside my house? They caused the issue without it, surely they can fix it without coming inside my house?

They outright refuse to lower my sync speed?!

They say someone has been sent out and just to wait it out ; but I KNOW a lower sync speed works *sigh* Taken to Twitter as well, as when the noise issue is fixed and can up the speed to what it was again.

EDIT : Twitter helped ; forced it to 10mbps :)
