Hi Guys,

This just hit me. I have a 4870x2 and it supports audio over the HDMI connection. Does that mean the display card is a "sound card" as well, or do you have to connect your sound card to it? If so, how?

It does mean it has an audio output but AFAIK you can only utilise this is by using HDMI cabling and the HDMI adapter, the latest drivers can be found on the Realtek site.

The drivers installed afaik with the ATI driver.

I have a DVI-2-HDMI converter, still need the cable, but I assume that the sound will play on your tv speakers then...

Nope, DVI does not carry audio. Only video.

Then why would the card support audio via HDMI, cause the only way to connect your card with the tv with a HMDI cable, is to use the DVI-2-HDMI converter...

Is the adapter on the TV or the card end of the cable?

Either way, a DVI port has no pins for sound. Physically impossible for anything to pass the sound data though a DVI adapter.

I have it and use it.

The DVI out of my HD4850 does indeed carry sound, but you can only use if with a HDMI cable plugged into the special included DVI-HDMI adapter.

So it works like this with me:
GFX card dvi - dvi/hdmi converter - hdmi cable - LCDTV(with video and sound)

This I can believe. Why would they include the function if it is not possible to use it.

So, the graphics card has a build in "sound card/codec"?

Yes Sir.
Quite a decent one to.
Only problem is you HAVE to use HDMI. You can use a good home theater system with an AMP and HDMI to get your sound. Or if your LCD monitor has an 3.5 audio out you can use that.

But anyway, the DVI out on the radeons DO carry 7.1 audio to but you can only use it with the dvi/hdmi converter. Have to wonder why the f they just didn't put a HDMI port at the back or 3.5 jacks?

Depends on what you have. Better than Realtek thats for sure.

It does it through a pass-through function.

If you watch an HD movie with 7.1 Dolby TrueHD, then it will reroute the audio through the HDMI connection.

@theVictorian: DVI technically has the capability. I believe you are referring to DVI-D. This can't transmit audio.

DVI-I/A can.

:)
