Alas there is very little info on it out there. It will more than likely be a smaller version of the current cards with better temps/clocks and not a whole architecture refresh. But I can tell you that expected release date is Q4 2010

I wish I could just get sponsored by these companies, like ATI/AMD, Nvidia and Intel! I just wanna get the new stuff and test it!! Then they can take it back and give me the even newer stuff

Same here I hope they don't pull a Nvidia on themselves wrt renaming old gen stuff with same architecture so they can pull customers.I highly doubt it.What am I saying?It's ATI we are talking about.

Southern Islands is rumoured to have the 5xxx series core, and be wrapped in the Northern Islands "uncore" stuff.. so it will be a hybrid type chip.

^^ as Toxicbunny said. The time to releasing Southern Islands is foreshortened because it should have been a 32nm based architecture, but since that conked out they're hybridizing the 5xxx pieces with the uncore Northern Islands and should have a quicker time to market.

I wonder how speeds are gonna reflect on 5850 / 5870.........
"Southern Islands" was never destined to be 32nm, TSMC isn't equipped or re-tooling for volume production of that node yet and in fact was never planned for the same time frame as product refresh for ATI. It's 40nm still.
As a process gets better you can get a denser core for a lower TDP and higher performance per mm. That's how we got 4890 after 4870, one was original 55nm and the next 55nm+
there's no problem if ATI renames say 5870 to 6850 or 5850 to 6830, 99% unlikely but wouldn't be wrong. There's no new API (still DX10/ OGL 4.0 there's no need for anythign else) and R&D time between Cypress and these chips would have been far too short to take out something revolutionary and it would also be a waste of money.
Name changes aside, these should be good cards
