Attack of the clones - pse help

OK, here's the situation. I have been successfully using CloneZilla for yonks. Now, one of my clients has this Vista machine where the HD is full (it is an old 80GB and has around 1GB left) and they want to upgrade to a bigger HD. No, not a better machine or OS - just the HD. And they want it all to work like before.

So, I do a Clone and it is not happy. Won't even mount, even when connected to other machines.

And to make this a complete waste of my time, the last little bit of that 80GB has bad sectors.

What suggestions do you have? Do you guys use other software for cloning (like Acronis and Paragon)? IS this other software worth the money?

And does anyone have any idea why the new clone simply will not boot?

You problem is probably the bad sectors.

The only thing that might get past that is GNU ddrescue

Also don't do the cloning via USB/Firewire/Thunderbolt etc use PATA/SATA interfaces.

I bought a copy of Paragon Backup a couple of years ago. It did what it said on the tin but I've actually found Paragon Recovery Live CD more useful for cloning hard drives and resizing partitions in the same way that you might with Clonezilla.

If you download the Paragon trial, you should be able to create the Live CD/USB from that.

If the drive is busted but still acessable use ghost. Turn on skip crc errors & force clone if iam not mistaken. I use ghost most of the time & it seems to work the best. Sometimes i have to use clonezilla or even acronis. Another alternative whould be eassus backup(might have spelt it wrong) its windows based.

Thanks for input. I eventually did the following:
(1) SATA. The USB connection simply was one more thing to worry about being the problem.
(2) In CloneZilla, same settings as NEo suggested for ghost
(3) Cloned to another 80GB drive first
(4) Then I cloned the clone to the 500GB, rebooted - it worked
(5) Finally, used GParted to extend to full size of 500GB
